How do you say 'to have' in Japanese other than 持つ?

I have heard 持つ (motsu) isn't actually used very much so could you please tell me some different ways of saying 'to have' and how they would be used in different contexts? Thanks.

Well, which English 'have' do you mean? Have a party? Have to work? Have a dog? All are different in Japanese, as they are in English, they cover different aspects than ownership.

If you want to say 'I have a pen,' ペンを待っている,' is fine.

Have as in 'to own an item'. But I've heard that the word when saying 'to have' for a pet is different, so I would also like to know that please.
