I find using the Japanese edition of Windows eliminates all those problems nicely.

If you have a Macintosh running OS 10.3.9 or better, you have full Japanese support built-in to your operating system, including fonts and Kotoeri input method. The nice thing about kotoeri is that it learns to do things your way. If you enter a name in kana, it pops up a list of kanji, then remembers your selection. The next time you enter 鮎沢さん, that's the FIRST thing that comes up.

It doesn't do that in my experience, at least not in the way I think he's talking about it. Kotoeri will offer you the selection before you finish typing it if it looks like that's what you're going to type, and pressing tab allows you to choose it. Also, I can type foreign (or just strange made up) names with さん at the end and Kotoeri will remember that it's supposed to be in hiragana, something that doesn't quite work with IME all the time. Kotoeri is better at selecting conversions in my experience.

yes, IME doesn't auto-complete words or names, but it does remember the last kanji or kana i selected for any given compound, word or name.

1. Nice Gaijin is correct. MS IME remembers the most recent kanji spelling for any word.
2. MS IME works brilliantly in MS Word, and if you have Windows XP, it should work in wordpad too.
3. Buying Japanese Windows is a terribly silly solution to the issue, since the IME works just fine in the English version and not everybody has $200 lying around to buy something debatably more useful than what they already have.

1. I wasn't really saying he wasn't. I was trying to explain what I thought grikdog was talking about, thinking that Windows users wouldn't know about it (although he'll have to confirm whether I was right). However, IME won't always remember the last thing you typed that didn't go to kanji. I remember trying to get my name to convert correctly to be a major hassle every time I did it. Kotoeri does a better job of breaking things up than IME, too. It won't leave you stuck with having to delete something and type it again in smaller sections to get the conversion you want as often as IME does.

2. I mostly type in Japanese on the internet. Are you saying that IME works better with Word than with IE or Firefox?

I herd IME doesn't let you type on microsoft word or sanything, exsept for the internet. I want a prgram for everything...can someone give me the exact link where i can just click download or install or soemthing...

Windows XP's IME works fine in Microsoft Word and other programs too. It's OK to use it.

However, the IME for Windows 95 and 98 that you download from Microsoft can only be used in IE or Outlook. This isn't the case with WinXP's IME, though.

doinkies also has Windows XP and has the IME, and doinkies can type in Japanese in most programs other than IE/Firefox/etc.

Don't start a new thread about something that's already being discussed in an active thread. Anyway, that question's already been answered in this thread a few times. IME works beautifully in Microsoft Word.

Please take a look here for instructions on how to activate Windows XP's Japanese IME. (Particularly, look at Step 2, because that tells you how to activate the IME while Step 1 only tells you how to activate Japanese language support on web pages, which doinkies assumes you already have. ^^)
