Hokkaido connected to Honshu?

I am planning on a trip to Hokkaido this summer. Now I know Kyushu and Shikoku are both connected to Honshu through bridges. How about Hokkaido? I don't think there's a bridge connecting Hokkaido to Honshu but is there a tunnel of some sort? Or the only way is to take ferry? I asked my Japanese roommate and he doesn't know the answer too. Does anyone know about this? Thank!
 
I'm a bit surprised the tunnel isn't better known. If we could start some rumors about how Napoleon wanted to invade Hokkaido ... wait a minute, I'm a bit off there aren't I? Wrong continent and age.

Actually, godppgo, I would suggest you forget the tunnel anyway and make that water jump by ferry boat. Really! If you've got the time you should take a ferry boat all the way to Hokkaido. There is a lot to be said for using the ferry. Ever sat in a bathtub that had a natural wave motion? It's really great if you're the only one in that huge tub and can slide from side-to-side all by your lonesome.

I've made the train trip through that tunnel.

Believe me; it has nothing to recommend it. Take a ferry.
 
If it's anything like the Kanmon Tunnel connecting Honshu and Kyushu, then the only thing going for it is probably the price.

Since the bridge is part of the expressway system, and the tunnel is just part of the local network of roads, the toll to use it is much less than the bridge.

Of course, I'm assuming you're driving here. I've taken the train to Kyushu also by tunnel, and well, it's a dark tunnel...

By the way, I just checked, and yes JR does have a tunnel linking Honshu and Hokkaido as Mike Cash said. The tunnel alone is about a 30 minute ride.
 
The tunnel suggests a motorway. from my experience of Japanese motorways ide rather not, especially the mostrosities that snake through the more urbanised parts.

I agree, the ferry sounds a better option, some fresh air, and a slow relaxing cruise over to hokkaido , nothing like having the time to think to yourself, the fresh air, the view, the space to stretch and walk about, sounds better.

Honestly, if i could get to Japan by boat ide rather sail but a week sounds a bit too long a travel time and apparently theres pirate hotspots along the way. :p

The Seikan Tunnel is a railway tunnel.

I think I'll go for the ferry as it sounds like a more enjoyable experience.

Thanks Hiroyuki for the info. The ferry fare isn't as expensive as I thought it's going to be. The festival also look very itneresting. I am really looking forward to spend some time there!
