Does anyone know what these symbols mean in Japanese?

It's a word that means "explain" or "explanation" depending on the context.

It's read "setsumei", for your information.

What dictionary sites do you use? They can't be worth very much if they don't have a word so common as that one. I recommend Jim Breen's WWWJDIC (link in my sig).

Worldlingo.com (not actually a dictionary site) seemed to have no trouble translating 説明 into "explanation" when I tried it. Are you sure you were using it correctly?
