Help with research!

I have to write a research paper for my U.S. History class and I want to do something on Japanese and US diplomatic relations throughout history. Does anyone have any controversial topic ideas? I need to be trying to prove something. I was thinking maybe.. are there any two side people are really divided on? Differences of opinion by the Japanese citizens and US citizens about diplomatic relations in general?
Any ideas are appreciated, I know so little about this topic so I thought I'd go here for advice!

Without an American banker, Jacob Schiff, Japan could not win, or even could not start, the Russo-Japanese War.
And it was lucky enough to have a mediator, the US, of the war.

It was, however, unlucky that the former USSR did not play the same mediator role like the US in the WWII.

Last year, some Americans were surprised to know that there were anti-Vietnam war movements in Japan after seeing a photo exibition in NYC.
