Hi guys,
I was wondering if I could get some help with a quite from 観音様 the Buddha deity from a book called わらしべ長者。its part of the Japanese graded reader set.
In the book the main character 佐吉さん has just ask the deity for help.
観音様 says.
「これから、あなたは何かを拾うでしょう」
佐吉さん、says
「何かを拾う?」
観音様 says
「そうです。そして、拾ったものは捨てないで大切に持っていなさい」
Is it saying.
After this you'll pick up something? After this I think you will pick up something? Or should pick up etc.
And he says.... pick up something?
The next part is confusing for me

Yes, and the thing that you picked up don't discard it and don't hold importance????
Not sure how these commands are meant to be treated.
よろしくお願いします

"You'll pick up (acquire) something".

The いなさい is the verb いる conjugated to a command deriving from なさる. It isn't negative.

Aren't you familiar with ごめんなさい ?

Other examples:

静かにしなさい
食べなさい
座りなさい
だまって(い)なさい

As with the 〜ている form, you will sometimes find the い dropped in this construction as well.

よく覚えなさい!

P.S. I don't think Kannon technically qualifies as a deity, but the point would be very hard to make. As originally conceived, Buddhism was without deities. Now it is lousy with them.

Hi mikesan,
I am familiar with that form of command.
I don't know what is meant by
拾ったものは捨てないで大切に持っていなさい」
Don't throw it away and...
大切に
What is the particle に doing here?
Then don't hold it?

The に is making 大切 into an adverb telling how he is to 持っていなさい the 拾った物

Perhaps you're misunderstanding 大切?

I think i made two mistakes. First i missed the adverb and second i thought 持っていなさい was a negative again. I need to read more carefully. That said thanks mikesan. I reads don't throw it away and treasure it or take care of it
