help with hiragana/kanji for GIFT/GODSEND?

Hi everyone ! I hope someone is able to help me...
My sister is looking for a translation for the word
gift. We've come up with a few words but need to verify...
She's looking for the word gift to mean as a gift to oneself,
as a person that came into your life at exactly the right moment,
as in a gift from heaven.
We have Okurimono for gift...
Atae for godsend?
but wonder if the correct way to say this would be Tenyo?
てんよ heaven's gift ?

Any/all help would be greatly appreciated !

I think the best way to say it would be

天からの贈り物
てん から の おくりもの
ten kara no okurimono

Which apparently is also the name of a Japanese biographical documentary with the English title of "gift" -- hopefully this helps. Also, I've never seen the word "ten'yo" used before, but a quick google search turned up this quote:
天与は多少一般的ではないかもしれません。天与はコネ や遺産、運などの本人の資質とは無関係の判定を行いま す。
which basically says that "ten'yo" refers to things like inheritance and luck that have nothing to do with a persons abilities. (It also says that it's not a very common word)

Other possibilities might be "tengoku (heaven) kara no okurimono" or "kamisama (god) kara no okurimono"

I'm sorry, I should have just said to begin with:
She wants to get a tattoo that represents someone
who came into her life and was a "Godsend" or a gift from God,
'Heaven's gift', such as a child or a new love.

I'm pretty sure 神様からの贈り物 was the way it was put in Tokyo Godfathers, so I vote for that one.
 
I vote against a kanji tattoo altogether, but if she's dead set on writing something on her body that she can't even read, 神様からの贈り物 is as good as anything else.
 
also the word "gift" such as would mean like a gift to
yourself, when youre starting your life over.

She's looking at hiragana more than kanji~
even though she/we cannot
read Japanese - the meaning of the one word would be known
(with your help and the help of a few friends, and again its
so very much appreciated!)
and have a very beautiful meaning, if just to her.
 
I'm afraid there is no word like that, or at least none that I've ever heard.

I get the feeling that that concept doesn't even exist in Japanese. I could be wrong, but you'll have to wait for a native speaker to confirm or deny that.

or simply 天賦 is ok.
 
I suppose I'm not really sure exactly what you're asking for but if you want one word that has a clear, single meaning I would go for something general like
grateful or thankful. ありがたい or かんしゃ（感謝）。 Maybe あたえ which can be either translated as "gift" or "godsend."

If you use atae I think you should use it with 天の, as in 天の与え. It seems that 神の恵み is also a possibility, but I'm not sure about how closely they come to what you want.

I agree with Glenn.
あたえ simply means "giving" or something given on its own. It has no connotation of "god". If OP's friend wants "gift" "godsend" something like 天の or 神の should be added.

If all that is wanted is "godsend," naturally the idea of gift is included in that. It was my impression the OP was looking for something that at least had the potential (to those involved) of a broader meaning.

Anyway, at least I agree with not wanting a kanji tattoo from a non-Japanese artist.
 
These threads inevitably turn into a grammar-rodeo between the more learned amongst us (Glenn, undrentide, Elizabeth, I'm looking at you...!)....

Since my study doesn't permit me to be so skilled in kanji, I'm here for the exclamation mark... The consternation that says, hey, THIS IS A BAD IDEA...

Why do you want to get a kanji tattoo? Because the characters look pretty, or different or special... Why not just get the words "Godsend" in gothic lettering, believe me, that's 1000% better than what will turn out to be a sloppy mis-interpreted probably wrong, meaningless blob of what looks like a foreign language.

It hardly matters because you're trying to interpret what I will call, but what isn't an idiomatic phrase (idioms are phrases that can not be interpreted by merely the words that make them up... an example of an actual idiom is something like "Don't count your chickens before they hatch...") regardless... when you try to convert concepts that may or may not exist in another language you're just traversing a well-tread path that leads to misery, shame, laughter, regret and a combination of the all of the above.

You're much better off just getting a kanji dictionary, pointing to a word or phrase at random and getting a prison tattoo of it... I hope I've discouraged you enough for today... I'll let you know this isn't a personal attack, it's an attack against the IDEA, not yourself.
 
Don't get a kanji tattoo.
You know how tattoos go bodged later in life, well I know a chinese bloke who has a tattoo in Chinese, and it looks even worse than an English one does. He had it done in China, where they are used to writing symbols (or 漢字）. In 30 years time, she'll regret having a kanji one done. Get an English one (or something in Latin in gothic lettering!)

Olympus donum - Thought that would be a nice one!

(It is probably a crude translation, Olympus meaning heaven and donum meaning gift...)
That might be good!
Before you ask, I used to sing choir, so had to learn some latin for old songs, not grammar, but some vocab...
