HELP! Student Travel To Japan.

Hey guys,
i know this thread may be in the wrong place, but i'm new here, so i'm not sure where it should go!
And i'm sure this question has been asked before, but!....
i'm just a student, so i havent got much money. But i would love to travel and stay out in japan for a month or so, just to get a taste of the country. Is there a way i can do this? Is it possible to work, or teach in return for housing and travel? Is there somewhere, where i could get a grant for travel?
I'm at a loss here! could anybody help a guy in need?!

Yeah, it's definitely possible to go to Japan and volunteer or work - most likely teaching English. Go to google and put in a search for it - options will definitely come up. You can also find scholarships if you type in a search for it.

You can't get a job for just a month. Volunteer yes. Work, no. Work requires a visa, and you can't get one for that short a time.

Just come and visit. If you don't have enough money for that, look into homestays. That is, have your school look into them for you. That's their job.

If the OP goes with a program, then I'm pretty sure it's possible to work for just a month. It won't be treated as a full-time job, more like a student internship, but I'm pretty sure it's possible. (Sorry, I assumed the OP meant more of an intern-like job rather than a full-time job because he said he's a student.) I was interested in doing that at one point too, but realized I would prefer to stay for a longer time and settle down.

OP: I can't give URLs because I haven't been here long enough, but try looking up InternAbroad. That's usually what I used to research.

Exactly what you need. You pay something like 1,000 a month or 1,200 for 2 or 3 months doing homestay and teaching them English.

I didn't do it because I'm not a US citizen.

Try hard enough and you get get work illegally I'm sure

But yeah... I wouldn't recommend doing that. I'd push for home stay or a cheap program through a school

From what I gather about that site, the internships are all in the USA.

As for the "work and study abroad" options, it says

Experience the culture and excitement of living in another country with a host family by signing up for our Overseas English Tutor program. For anywhere from 1 to 3 months (your choice!), you will stay with a host family* and teach conversational English to them during your stay. They provide the room and board, you provide the casual, conversational tutoring (not a big time commitment, only up to 15 hours a week), and the rest of your time can be spent exploring the city and country you have chosen.

and

# Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma;
# Must be a citizen of the United States or Canada;
# English must be your primary spoken language;

and

# One month: $975.00
# Two months: $1,075.00
# Three months: $1,175.00
* Price does not include travel insurance, airfare, or passport/visa costs. Small surcharge may apply in select countries.

So, you buy your plane ticket and insurance and pay to teach...? I should put teach in quotation marks. Tutor. Since this is limited to 3 months, I assume it is a tourist status, not any sort of work visa.

Yeah, but it is the cheapest way of doing the closest thing to a homestay program in Japan. For a couple of months and doing 'volunteer' or 'work' to cover his expenses.I think this is what most matches the OP's needs. It's the cheapest option I can think about.

How many students have that much money lying around? We're talking about airfare plus US$1000. Students worry about beer money, and they graduate with huge debts.

As for the internship locations, start here:

Indeed. I took a look at that program and it is in the U.S. It's an internship for international students to come and work and live in the U.S.

I didn't know about that program until now that you pointed it out.

Now, what I was talking about is here:

I know they say one has to be a North American citizen but he can contact them and see if it's OK for him as a British to go and teach.
I know this can be a possibility for him since I was nearly accepted for the program despite being Mexican and my mother tongue being Spanish. I wasn't accepted because my mother tongue is not English. I don't think that can be a problem for him.

Oh, and I know students worry about beer money but I hate to break it but... it is practically impossible going to Japan for free. A price has to be paid and that's the cheapest price I found. (Or you could do it like former member Ghettocities )
