Through the cloudy skies that hover above and around those grand peaks to the west, the Japan Alps, I can figuratively see the sun shining down on us in all its glory--and would like to share that in a great, big WELCOME to JREF !!
There is a section on learning Japanese which can help--and folks there would surely be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions. It will be a long, hard road to walk down, but learning the language can be so much fun, and so fulfilling !! Please do your best at it, and don't give up !! Do you have any books that teach the hiragana or katakana yet? I would suggest buying some books that can help with that.
I would also like to hear more about you--where you live, your hobbies, and what started your interest in things Japanese. I moved here from Arizona--the desert--and now live in the icebox of Honshu...boy it's pretty cold in the winter. I hope to hear more from you!! MM

I live in Rhode Island (college) & Connecticut (home state). I spend a lot of time on the computer, doing a number of things. I'm studying Software Engineering for my associates degree, and then for my bachelors. So far it has been OK. Only into the 3rd quarter. I'm going to take Japanese next quarter. That should help me down the road
For katakana and kanji etc.. I was thinking of doing after I get a good ground on enough words & speaking the language. Is it a good idea, or should I progress equally ?

Good morning a51ts4 san ! ohayoo! It's fine if you use a few Japanese words in your posts. The medium language is English, however, and so if a post doesn't have too much Japanese, and often enough (not every single time/word) the English translation, it's no problem. In the area where Japanese is being learned, or the fora which is for writing in Japanese, of course, in Japanese is 100% OK. Please do check those out.
I would suggest that you learn the katakana, and especially the hiragana, right along with you oral communication. Even trying to memorize the kanji (Chinese characters) for some vocabulary is recommend--the purpose is to increase the accuracy of sight reading rather than simply phonetic reading.
Japanese kana is read phonetically, but reading it that way slows the reader down. If a person can recognize, say, わからなかった (wakaranakatta) right of the bat via visual contact, it will be much faster than having to go through each character...wa, ka, ra, na, ka, tta. Do your best !! and keep up the good work.
