I'm bumping a two month old thread because I don't want to start a new one about Gwen Stefani...
Gwen Stafani lives the life of every American nerd's dream... she's rich enough that she can afford to hire Japanese girls to follow her around (and to be able to Afford to dress in Hysteric Glamour, Onitsuka Tiger, & Bathing Ape (maybe, Gwen??) ) so that she can school us all on Harajuku fashion... yikes... then you have lyrics like this:
I'm fascinated by the Japanese fashion scene
Just an American girl in the Tokyo streets
My boyfriend bought me a Hysteric Glamour shirt
They're hard to find in the States, got me feeling couture...
Listen, the reason that Hysteric Glamour is so hard to find in the US is just because that nobody is buying it. $400 dollar jeans that have name recognition don't rush off the shelf, so good luck selling those $90 dollar Bathing Ape t-shirts or $400.00 Hysteric Glamour Jeans.
Using another race as a prop or a means to look hip is probably the saddest thing in the world... It's like going to England for a few weeks and coming home with an English accent... Gwen manages to do it all out though so it looks both like posing, and like crass commercialism...
Furthermore, she is so gung ho about it, I don't know what we are supposed to do? Give her an award for bridging the cultural divide that the rest of us gap-toothed stupids were too dim to appreciate...?
I'm not even into the whole city fashion Cutie Magazine thing so I've got nothing to defend, but, Gwen Stefani should catch a brick.
edit: oddly... I was right... a few lines down H. Girls lists Bathing Ape, hell that song should just be a list of things that Gwen bought this year... boring, trite, blasse, unintentionally creepy and fetishistic.
Edit #2: Check out the prices on that Bathing Ape page below, courtesy of Google Ads, close to $300 dollars for some sneakers!? Who do you think I am, Adam Horowitz?!?
" [...]And though the girls are apparently homegrown Americans, they are bound by contract to speak only Japanese when shadowing the blonde pop star."
