Hi Anna!
I have a very good first memory of meeting someone from Poland, from a very nice lady I was lucky enough to teach with In Kanto for a short time. Warm, friendly, easy-going and always cheerful, it was a pleasure to spend time with her. I only met her boyfriend briefly, but he too was very nice.
Unfortunately, we lost touch after I left Japan, though I did hear she went on to work at a company in Tokyo. Perhaps I should try to email her again?
Anyway, she told me many nice things about Poland, it's cuisine and customs; I must say it sounded very nice, I will try to visit one day.
As you'll know, many Polish workers have come here to the UK recently with the expansion of the EU. There are quite a few in my small town! So far the ones I met have been friendly, gentle folk, i'm glad to meet such people!

Made of stone, I can see you already know the most essential phrase in Polish It might come in very handy when you decide to visit Poland one day!!! Let me know when you make up your mind
I know many Polish workers have come to UK recently. The estimates are around two million people. My friend from London says it's much easier to "polish your Polish" than Japanese these days
And Poland recently is a very popular destination for British stag parties. Cheap flights and cheap bear, as they say...

I'm sorry to hear about the stag groups. While i'm sure the tourist revenue is very welcome, all too often they cause trouble and bad reputation for us Brits 
But many thanks to you, Anna! You've reminded me of my Polish friend who I shall contact again if possible. If she's still in Tokyo then i'll be able to meet her when I visit later this year
And Poland has now been added to my list of countries for my world tour later this year! It would be very nice to read more about your country on the forum

Made of stone, from what I've heard, most of the party guys go to Cracow, former capital of Poland (something like Kioto, but made of bricks). Lovely place, so it'd be a shame to miss it. Just stick to to the places with "no stag parties" sign in the front door
My hometown is located in north-eastern Poland, close to Belarussian border. It's surrounded by forests, so the area is sometimes reffered to as "green lungs of Poland". In the close vicinity there is Bialowieza national park, famous for its primary forest (is that proper name???) and European bison. Our local brewery even brews Bison beer, which you would enjoy I think
Food is also delicious. My personal favourite is cabbage stew which never tastes the same
Foreign music is very popular around here. I guess some of the singers are even more popular here than in their home countries.. same thing also applies to some writers

Anchan, there have been quite a few small but interesting coincidences for me with other members since I joined this site, you would be amazed (I know I am!) Here is another one, from my small town's local newspeper yesterday:
(The Polish Deli, Newly opened in Sevenoaks - great variety of low priced original items, fresh bread everyday. Open Mon to Fri 10-7pm)
And guess where it's location is? Na przeciw szpitala - opposite the hospital where I was born!!!

So, do people spend a lot of time there on outdoor pursuits and enjoying nature I wonder? IF you have a pic or two please post them, it'd be nice to see what it looks like
Eer, I suppose most of them prefer shopping malls pursuits... few of them are recently hanging down the trees in Rospuda swamps area (recognized as Nature 2000 area by EU) in order to prevent Polish government from building a highway estacade over there. Maybe you've heard about it?...
Hmmm...cabbage stew...is there a simple recipe for that? I've been cooking lots of stews recently - simple, tasty and healthy. That reminds me, I must do a nabe soon too! :gohan:
I forgot to tell what cabbage stew is called in Polish. Its name is bigos and it's made of cabbage and meat leftovers. We also add dried forest mashrooms, dried prunes and different spices. I'm sure they sell all the necessary stuff at the store na przeciwko szpitala where you were born
btw, I had zaru udon today oiishikatta yo!

Actually I feel rather embarrassed that anyone might have thought I translated that...I should have said that an the English was published next to the Polish in the newspaper

No I hadn't heard of that protest, but it sounds interesting. I'm all in favour of fighting 'progress' that robs of us of our natural heritage. Unfortunately, we see it all the time over here...
I searched BBC news but couldn't find anything on it, though there was a story about Polish beer becoming a big hit in the UK

No problemo, Anchan! If I want to quote a whole post or a large part of one then I usually reply clicking on the little 'quote' bar at the bottom-right of each post. Then I just delete the bit I don't want to quote. If I want to quote many bits of the same or different posts, then I use the 'post reply' function at the bottom left of each thread. Then I copy and paste the sentences I want to reply to, highlight the text, and click on the 'quote' function up top (it looks like a little speech bubble!)
Now if anyone could tell me how to 1) imbed a link within a word or sentence, or 2) how to preview and then go back to a post without losing the hard returns, or even 3) how to reply to a specific post rather than the thread in general, i'd be a very grateful stone indeed!

Yes, the young man did seem to be a little "hyper". But then the older man kept inviting him to join them, and that seemed strange until his wife mentioned that he just wanted to show off in front of the young man. I think the older man envied the younger one (he kept trying to imitate him, like throwing his knife and trying that trick where he would stab around his fingers on the wood).

Most welcome! I should perhaps also add that it's best where quoting different people in the same reply, for clarity one should identify who said what just above, or inside, the quote box.
I see they have a multi-quote function here, but i've never been able to get it working.
Anyway, back to Poland! Anchan, had you heard that some local authorities here are putting road signs up in Polish for all the Polish drivers over here - it looks like I must learn Polish after all!

An-chan, I must say that the many Polish folk (Poles?) that i've met over here have all been most welcome additions to this country! Taxi-drivers, bar and restaurant staff, many of them are far cheerier and do a better job than some of the English workers! I teach some Polish people too, they are good students
Now, if you can just please ask some Polish politicians to come here and replace the British ones we have who administer so badly, i'm sure the UK will owe you huge thanks!
