The company said this change aimed to improve the working environment and attract more workers amidst a labour shortage. Previously, the fast-food chain's Japanese unit required employees' hair colour to appear "natural." However, the company revised its appearance policy to promote diversity and inclusivity.

The new hair colour policy was introduced on trial at an Osaka outlet. The results were positive, with the store reporting a threefold increase in new hires in April compared to the previous year. This is not the first time McDonald's Japan has relaxed its appearance standards. In August 2021, the company changed its policy to allow employees to grow beards, considering various factors such as religious beliefs. Other Japanese companies have also been following similar trends. Starbucks Coffee Japan Ltd. has revised its dress code to give workers more flexibility in choosing their preferred style. Additionally, Food & Life Companies Co. has relaxed the dress code for employees at its Sushiro sushi chain.
