Its a common problem, but you seem to have your country confused with your government. They are not the same thing. I am sure the majority of people in your country have nothing to do with that particular problem. Its a few people in government.

It's a common problem, but you seem to not understand how Chinese people view their country. A nation-state with elected government is a western is an Occident invention where the government and the nation is clearly defined. However China is both a civilization and until in recently forced to form a so-called "nation" due to western influence with clearly defined border, anthem etc. In the eyes of the Chinese back in the dynasty, our ruler enjoyed the mandate of heaven to rule the middle kingdom, not through election, it is the same now days, our communist government governs China with legitimacy not throught election. The government is like a parent to the citizens. The term 国家 means country but also government in Chinese language which is made up of the character for country and family. Our communist party are like our family and our territory are our home.

PS. Google picture the term 国家 and you'll get pictures mainly of communist party of China

Jackie Chan agrees!

Hmm, probably because China is a communist country. I'm not so sure how exactly a communist government rules but I think it's pretty safe to assume that full access to the internet, or moderate access, would be bad for communist rulers who want you to follow the status quo of the country and not be influenced by any "western" ideals... I could be wrong of course.

Here is an interesting article from New York Times: Opinion | Cheap Meth! Cheap Guns! Click Here. (Published 2013)

Not saying it's true but just interesting :)

Doesn't Communism deny the existence of gods or heaven? If so, where does the "legitimacy" come from?

In Europe in the Middle Ages, many people likewise believed that the king's mandate to rule came from God. (A most convenient proposition for kings and their minions.) Most modern Westerners would say that God does not choose kings, and that an unelected government is always illegitimate.

Communism seems to be in the same boat as rumors of vampires in the 15th century. Seems like some people never quite got out of the McCarthy era. Instead of listening to propaganda about communism from crusty old nationalist neighbors, how about reading the wiki? Communism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mind you I am not saying I love or endorse communism, but redefining it to include traits that really have nothing to do with communism is basically inventing goblins.

The key reason why America got herself aligned against communist countries is because American businessmen saw it as a risk to their overseas investments. And the lies and misconceptions, rivalries, and wars started from there.

No, communism dictates none of the above quotes. I believe the reason why the Chinese government rules with an iron fist is because they fear China falling apart from the inside. Its a country of one billion people and its not even homogeneous. I am not sure of what is the best way to govern China with a balance of justice that also prevents insurrection, but if it were up to me I would divide China into smaller countries first thing so that ethnic groups can rule themselves.

But the problem is not communism. Its oligarchy and an unwillingness to accept self-determination.

And then there is this Wikipedia link:

"While the Communist Party of China came to power in 1949, it was regarded as an atheist faction which viewed traditional religions as backwards, and Western religions such as Christianity as the tool of Western colonialism, and has steadfastly maintained separation of church from state affairs[17] in order to prevent recurrence of situations like the Taiping Rebellion."

So my essential question remains: from what source does China's government claim its mandate to rule?

I suspect that is a question that goes unasked as well as unanswered.

In fact, there are elections in China and you always have three choices of party, 1) THE Communist Party, 2) The COMMUNIST Party, or 3) The Communist PARTY.

So if anyone did ask the question, I am sure it would be brushed off with the retort "Well you voted right?".

But maybe someone in the know will correct me on that.
