I'd go with the latter, it looks vaguely asian but is not legible

Souvenir banner from the WWII Mariana Island Campaign, Operation Forager, against Japanese Imperial forces which ultimately lead to the bombing missions of the Japanese mainland.
The white cotton banner is approx. 16 x 16 inches with a stenciled red Japanese Rising Sun flag reading '1945 Tokyo! Marianas Islands,' Japanese writing and a small palm tree. Most likely field made by a US Marine.

Definitely looks vaguely Japanese inspired, but it's not Japanese, Chinese, or Korean characters
I had to check to see if Chamorro had a written language, but they use English lettering so it's not that either.

Slight possibility that it's Navajo Marine code talker's writing. Their writing has somewhat similar images.

Can you find any examples? I tried searching but everything I found was written in the alphabet

I looked through their writing with Google and found symbol writing they use but nothing I could match up. From the little I read , they created their own special code (spoken) to match the time and situation they were in , so I thought it might be possible they created their own special writing also. Sad they have all passed away , so no one to ask about it that I know of. It was just a shot in the dark.
