"人類の未来を憂いた者達" is a single noun phrase. The English is a little awkward sounding, but the subject of the sentence is not 'The People' as a whole further described by their feelings about the future, but rather -only- 'those people who were concerned about the future'.その前後に、人類の未来を憂いた者達が、残された文明の力を結集し、二人の若者に託した。
Amidst [the destruction], the people, concerned about their future, gathered the power of what remained of civilization and entrusted it to two young people.
It may be clarified in the coming sentences, but if I got that correct, what could it mean by "gathered the power of what remained of civilization".

The difference in translation is only a small change in phrasing but a substantial change in meaning, IMO.

The legend of a savior was spreading among people who were spending their time in fear of tomorrow, as is only natural.

Why did you change your previous translation "the future of mankind" to "their future"?
(FYI, your translation is for そのさなかに、その者達は自らの未来を憂い、残された文明の力を結集し、……. Cay you see the difference now?)
