Hi, over the last couple of days I have been having all sorts of problems with the forums. I suppose about 80 percent of the time I try to open any thread (click on a link in the list of threads), nothing happens. The browser window doesn't refresh and is "dead". The times when it does work it is often very slow ... in fact all of the forum pages seem to have got really slow to load and navigate, that's when they work at all. Even typing in this window is painfully "sticky". Is anyone else seeing this, or is it just me? I am using IE8 with Windows XP.

Also, could I mention that the "tweets" overlay that is permanently at the middle left of the screen impinges on the left hand margin of screen text and is really incredibly annoying. Is there any chance it could be moved somewhere where it is less in the way?

Also, I've just noticed that when I type a percent symbol, it displays as "&#37". And while editing this I've noticed that the silly bug where "preview" loses all the line breaks is still there. Any chance that could be fixed?

Update: Well, I've been making a few more posts over the last hour or so, and really the forum pages are virtually unusable for me with extreme slowness and buginess. The language forum has been so incredibly helpful for me with my studies that I do so hope these problems are temporary and can be fixed soon.

Eeky, first of all thank you very much for your feedback, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Also, I am sorry you have difficulties accessing the forum.

We have had a few server hickups last Sunday around noon JST and today, too. I have not been able yet to determine what caused them, but generally the server appears to be working fine. I have tested the forum in Firefox 7 (my default browser), in Opera, Safari, Google Chrome and just a tad in IE8 and 9. I have basically stopped using Internet Explorer since version 4. I cannot reproduce the server lag from here, but I'd appreciate more feedback in case other members experience the same problem.

A known and reported glitch, I recommend to spell out "percent" until I have found a solution.

@ Preview bug

I have noticed it, too. If you switch to the basic editor (not the advanced one) the original line breaks are preserved.

Thanks again for the feedback. I hope we can solve these issues one by one!

Hi Thomas, thanks very much for removing that "Tweets" button. Big improvement!

Today I'm trying to convince myself that the forums are not quite so slow, but to be honest it is pretty excruciating. Also, I am still having the same problems with threads simply not opening. There is a lot of seeming activity, with "loading" status bar messages and stuff, but then nothing. The IE window just dies and is never refreshed. I sometimes need to try three or four times before anything happens. It is very strange. If everyone was seeing this then I would expect there to be numerous complaints. Could it just be me? Do you think it could be a browser compatibility issue? I am not having any problems with any other websites, only jref.com.
 
Apart from the infrequent hickups previously mentioned there seem to be no server-related issues. We experience occasional load spikes, but I have yet to receive more reports on pages not loading.

In case you have other browsers installed (Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc) would you be so kind as to test them in order to find out whether that issue is IE-related or not?

Right, I'm finding the same. When I Ctrl+click on a thread to open in a new tab it seems much more reliable. If I just click to open in the same tab then usually it doesn't work.

Toritoribe, I notice you're using the same OS and browser as me, and I wondered if you are also finding the forums very slow recenty?
 
Thomas, I'm sorry to be so late to thank you.
(1) Buttons for jumping to pages are bigger and now much easier to hit them. The button for attached files does not interfere the page buttons any more.
(2) It is great to have the "tweet" floating button removed!

I have slightly changed the layout today:

- updated the header menu
- improved the breadcrumbs
- redesigned the New Thread and New Posts buttons

Please let me know if there are any other issues than the ones listed below.

Things to do:

  • Garbled "percent" symbol in uneditted posts
  • Search results page: attachment icons bleed into pagination in large threads
  • Enlarge "Post" button and change to a more prominent colour
    Implemented.
  • Members online today mod
    Implemented.
  • Bookmarks section: use only the icons, or make two columns
    Implemented.
  • Tapatalk encoding & Forumrunner installation
    Implemented.
 
I just lost the line breaks during an edit of a post that had been done with "Quick Reply".

I see above there was some recognition of a problem of some sort back in Oct. last year, so I'll test it now.

But in the box for entering text when I was editting I put the line breaks back myself, and that didn't seem right, somehow.
I'll post this and then click on the editor and see what's what.

Yep, the line breaks were gone in the text box. Not familair enough with this vBulletin platform to know whether I'm in basic or advanced. Still, it seems to be something that isn't quite right, if that is helpful. Well, the toolbar is showing, so maybe I'm in an advanced editor.

Oh yes, am using IE8. But you can see that in my User Agent.

EDIT Again: Because the preview shows the line breaks, but even now after clicking for the preview tool this text box shows no line breaks. That's interesting. Maybe no problem then. But a tad confusing. maybe a bit of fun, though.

EDIT No. 3: No, something is certainly wacky. The post after that last business had no line breaks except just above the second edit line. Didn't do any screen shots, but I suppose if you've got IE8 a staffer can see what I'm seeing with some experimenting. I also understand now the different editors. Now I'm in basic. Last time was in advanced.

These issues have been haunting this forum since the days of vB3. They might be partly related to the DB encoding. We used x-sjis when we started using vB in 2002, another vB-based forum I'm maintaining is based on UTF8 and has no such problems (line breaks, per cent symbol, editor issues).

I am currently working on converting the DB over to UTF8, not a simple task (declared encoding is x-sjis, tables latin1, target encoding utf8, mojibake all over the place).

Anyhow, I appreciate the feedback!

FYI, belatedly, the problems I was having above with excruciating performance, links not working and "dead" windows have all gone away since I bought a new PC (now using Win 7 / IE 9) (as we know, and discussed elsewhere, the percent sign and line-break-loss problems are still extant). As far as the performance was concerned, I think my previous PC was just too old and low spec to cope with the demands of this website. Whether the other problems were purely IE8-related I don't know, and, fortunately now, don't care!

Hi, a problem I've not noticed before...

When I try to edit a post previously saved (via "Edit post" button), the text is sometimes corrupted, e.g. with parts duplicated. A specific example, when I try to edit my most recent post in the thread によって / いられない / なんと , it appears like this:

With your hint I would only guess at "Maybe you thought I didn't understand it before, but...", but in context this but in context this hardly seems better than my first attempt first attempt.

The duplication of "but in context this" and "first attempt" is not in the original but has been corrupted somehow by the edit window.
