A fire destroyed a wooden reception building at a sub-temple within the grounds of Kōdaiji in Kyoto on 3 August, burning around 60 square metres. No one was injured, and the temple's main halls and cultural properties were not damaged.
The blaze broke out at Kōrin-in, one of Kōdaiji's sub-temples in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward. The fire department received an emergency call at around 6:30 pm from someone attending an event at the temple, reporting black smoke rising from the western side of the complex. A total of 41 fire engines and other emergency vehicles were dispatched. Firefighters brought the blaze largely under control within about 40 minutes, although it took roughly 12 hours to extinguish it completely.
The destroyed building served as a reception facility and included a tea room used for tea ceremony classes and other events. Its tiled roof collapsed in the fire, leaving charred wooden pillars and the exposed timber frame standing.

Kōrin-in (高林院 Kōrin-in) is one of the sub-temples of Kōdaiji (高台寺 Kōdaiji), a prominent Rinzai Zen temple in Kyōto's Higashiyama Ward. Kōdaiji was founded in 1606 by Nene (ねね, 1549–1624), the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉, 1537–1598), to commemorate her late husband. The temple is widely known for its landscaped gardens, tea houses and buildings associated with the Momoyama and early Edo periods. It has long been one of Kyōto's best-known historic temple complexes.
