Field cap kanji

Greetings! are the thread patterns meant to be kanji on this WWII field cap? The other items are simply there to better define the cap. The stamps on the inside of the cap are too far gone to see. I also have a couple more items I will be seeking help with in other threads. If possible I wish to preserve the names of the soldiers. Thank you for any interpretations!

Thank you very much, Tortoribe! You have helped in the past, and I greatly appreciate it. For some reason I seem to remember that "jima" means island - is that true?

Yes, I see that the symbols in IMG_2148 are different. I think I see a six and a two. Can you tell me what these are, and what they may mean? Possibly unit numbers? Thank you!
