Another "fugu" story I saw was an old Detective Colombo episode in which Leonard Nimoy killed someone with "fugu" poison. I was surprised to see people already knew about the poison outside Japan. (That was in the 1970s.)

Regarding murder with Japanese food, another thing that is used in crime novels is "anasakis (simplex)." A pathogenic worm that in rare cases finds its way into the human digestive tract through undercooked seafoods, I've seen it used to kill people in TV detective stories. It is a worm found in most cases in "shime-saba," mackerel marinated in vinegar and other seasonings but uncooked:

I've been told you don't have to worry about it much, because the worm larva is visible if it should happen to be in your slice!

stop me if i'm wrong but wasn't eastern culture quite a big thing in America back in the 70's and 80's?
i seem to recall 80's movies where japanese food was assosiated with yuppies (young business types).
and in the 70's it was popular due to the kung fu craze.

i may be wrong...seeing as i wasn't even alive back then!!!

Prawns are not neccessarily bigger than shrimp. Shrimp is the term used for when they come from the (saltwater) sea. as with prawn when they come from (fresh water) . and why say maguro? what kind of maguro? honmaguro, mebachi maguro? akami, chutoro or otoro?

Is there another sauce you can dip the sushi in besides soy? I am not a big fan of soy sauce. I like crab california rolls and salmon egg.
