Favorite Japan music - all types

Thanks for that all that info Furan - I can't wait to get started. It helps alot because I don't have a clue. Thanks for everyone with their tips of bands and musicians- I'll have to make some kind of complicated chart to keep track of it all.

I don't know if I'd like that noisy band or not pinkkillerkisou, but I like to listen to Metal Machine Music when I vacumn - it somehow makes vacumning seem more interesting. So I might. I like underground stuff as well, however, I haven't been into music lately, and lost touch. I rotate my obessions. Yesterday I realized I was addicted to Japan. It's sad really. I meant to get another interest before that happened. But after all, Japan is a nice world to escape to, if only in your head. I KNOW you guys can't help me get this monkey off my back. So I guess I'm stuck for a while.

I also like pots and pans, kitchen utensils, squeeky chairs and the like. It's got that extra super low fi touch that is so great. In fact it's so low fi - it's NO FI.

And you remind me - the worst singer I've ever heard was the singer for the Crucif***s. And I really liked him. So that says alot about my taste for....really bad singers, heh. In fact I have a really crappy voice myself and like to sing along.

Takako Minekawa - anyone that writes a song about their cat, can't be all bad. And I would like to hear how she sings in Japanese and English mixed. That sounds interesting. I really have such a diverse taste in music. I can take the pop stuff, as long as it's got a good melody, and a little soul at least, ala ABBA. Besides ABBA is so gay, which is a positive. Which reminds me - has anyone seen Rupauls latest video? It's pretty funny. Sorry - I'm the queen of tangents. So in other words I might like the pop band Ua.

I like some techno - though very picky about it. However if it's Japanese I have to check it out. (have no choice) And vinyl does rule. It's true. Thanks Rich

hehe, yeah, I didn't say Malice Mizer cos I thought Miz had already said them... I like Klaha's voice better out of the three, though.

PKK... you're gonna UL some Galneryus? So cool, I've been looking for ages for their stuff and I hadn't found yet

Well Furan the bands I like at the moment sadly, and this is really embarassing for me to admit are bands I discovered on tv. My fave band now is the White Stripes. I love the raw guitar and drum, and the simplicity of 2 people in the band. Also, I like the roots of rock n' roll music, so it's that country & western, blues, early 50's 60's rock they're influenced by - I like all that. From rockabilly, 60's pop rock to garage stuff, also love old r&b and soul. So White Stripes is raw and very roots influenced -I like it.

Oh yeah - I did a search for 60's Japan rock and found an article about rockabilly in Japan - Elecki (isn't it so cute the way they turn english world into japanese words) (I say, sounding like a Peanuts character) and "Group Sounds". I really have to check that stuff out, but haven't figured out how to get it yet.

And I love girls singers ala Dusty Springfield from the 60's, and pop ala Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg. So, if there's anything like that at all in Japan I have to know.

I also like Beck, like that low fi sound, and he does interesting things with his guitar and whatnot that he plays.

And it's not really true that all my bands I discovered on tv, because I discovered Pulp and Suede and the Divine Comedy in Brit mags. I stopped listening to them, but now, I started, and they are still about my favorite. Pulp I like - they're funny with soul, and complex. And Suede great guitars & tunes. Also love funny music, if there's such a thing as funny music in Japan, and I'm sure that there is.

I like alternative black music, and of course I'm very influenced by early punk and 80's hardcore punk. Even though I haven't been listening to alot of music, I've been a music fan for a very long time. Oh yeah there's ska - but I really like the early ska best - great melodies. I don't like when it's too "happy" and not enough soul in ska the way some of the newer bands are.

Hmm... I wonder if theres gay Japan music. Well of course there is - I just don't know about it yet, I'm sure. I mean the kind of gay music actually for gay people, as I hear there is another type gay stuff, that's really for women. I'm not gay. (just thought i'd let you know that)

And as I said I like traditional and old folk music, early blues, etc. From the Japanese people I know, jazz seems very popular there. So I suppose I'll have to get into that too (sigh). Well, I guess that's enough influences, so, I really like about everything that's good really. But if any of this brings to mind more music, let me know. That's alot to check out but I can take it. (i think, gulp)

Thanks isayhello (Hello) I will definately check out Kra!

I love your allergy pic LOL And they definately have a cool Japan hairdo thing going on over there. I feel so inadequate. Does anyone know a good hairdresser?! Though they scare me. Probably why I have a hard time finding a good one. Cos the hair never ever turns out anything like the picture i show them.

Hm...candy and jrockers...so much J-culture to absorb. Off topic rules. No rules. Rentrer en Soi AHA we got another cool band out of pinkkillerkisou - see she is lovely. and furan is impressive this is true

Did I mention I like experimental music too?

oh yet more music, Dollporn, thanks and j-rocky hm...inputs - tries to compute - i'm sure it will sink it once i've checked out all this stuff - if my brain doesn't explode before then

ah- you're right furan "get used to j-rock first" -you're wise- zen check - ok now

and if you or anyone wants to download some music files to get the newbie started, it would be more than wonderful, either here or to my addie

oh Gackt can't dance therefore we must love him, lol, I love him already. (who?)

yes sharing is nice, especially when you spare people like me from sifting through, as isayhello said "those millions of j-rock bands that look and sound the same" doooomo arigatoooo (i love saying that)

aha! someone already told me about the B-z (I know something hah!) Thanks Mizerable D and Kinsao for more bands

pinkkillerkisou suddenly spews forth a list of lots more bands and then furan explains stuff - how do you say "excellent" in Japan?

I did get a Plastics in vinyl about a oh i can't say how long ago but, I loved that early Japan punk band. Hey - are there any other 70's J-punk bands? Or are they the only one? It can't be so.... I got a Yellow Magic Orchestra, does that count? And Ryuichi. So I have experienced J-rock before. Hey 3 anyway

oh or were the Plastics 80's maybe whatever they r cool

wow Limonette your enthusiasm is infectious!

Well, I never really actually 'listed' bands... I figured everyone really said what I think for good stuff to listen to... but...

Has anyone mentioned Kagerou yet? I really like them.
Did I mention that I like Psycho le Cemu? Their music can be more jrock or it can be more like dance music...
Moi dix Mois is quite good but in my opinion it sounds a bit much the same if you listen to much together. So I would recommend to listen to one or 2 songs.
What else... well, people uploaded a whole load of Pierrot last evening! (lol - it was evening here, anyway ) I don't know Pierrot, so I'm looking forward to listening, you can pick that stuff up from on here.
Plastic Tree! *dances the happy but stupid dance* You must listen to them!
Hizaki is also good.
Definitely Aushvitz, I second that.
Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer and X Japan go without saying - they're pretty much what you might call classic 'intro to jrock' bands, lol.
I recently got to like Onmyouza.
Try Kana, and Clothoid Doll, if you like to hear female vocalists.
Kra is good. I find it's not so heavy though.
Furan said so much about Kagrra I don't need to say it! lol
And Gazette.
I like what I hear so far of SID, I would recommend them too.
12012.
MUCC.
Gackt... is more like pop now... I find his music quite varied, so I recommend to listen to quite a few songs before to make a judgement.
L'arc en ciel!! Personally my favourite is the song Driver's High.
Art Marju Duchain... is more goth... uses synth and stuff if you like to hear that more kind of music...
Jinkaku Radio is very good, if you can find their songs... to me they are hard to find
I like Schwardix Marvally. You know, I only listened to them first because I thought 'what a cool name!' but then I think they are good music.
Blood.
D'espairs Ray.
Devil Kitty.
Eve of Destiny (goth rock sort of thing).
Kozi!!!!! (I love that man......... )
You could also try Glay and Luna Sea... I never really got into them but...
Guitar Wolf! I like that band! I have only 2 songs
Hide.
Janne da Arc.
Miyavi! (of course...)
Penicillin are good.

I could go on for ever.
But I'm afraid I don't know much about Japanese music other than jrock. :sorry: Like you I like blues music, and some of jazz, but I have no knowledge of that from Japanese perspective.

A good site for finding out about various jrock bands is www.jrocksaga.com I love that site, go to 'links' and 'artist index' and you're away!!!

Finally, of course, I will send you anything that I have, if you want to listen! If you pm me which bands/artists you're interested to hear.

Happy hunting!

o god.... so much writting! *is a really poor reader*

umm.... firstly....
HAHA!
take your time dear, i was only joking

secondly, you're very welcome Limonette, i'm glad i helped in some way

and then.... Kinsao.... as much as i'd love to read that post... it's really too many words for me this early in the morning.... or... afternoon
but i noticed you're mentioneing of my precious Pura! (my eyes were draw nt it like a magnet )

lol ok, so now i've skimmed through...

YES\! Kagerou are one amazing band....
they're ongs tend to be extreemly long i find, but i don;t give a crap because i love long songs XD
umm... they were one of the first bands i listened too... so i have very high attatchments to them ^^;
(however, i don't really know how to describe them... just that they're unique, pretty heavey at times, but with great melodys and such)

also, you mentioned you like the female vocals.... this was my opinion before i got to listening to Jrock.... then i decided in Jrock i prefer the male vocals...
but, as Kinsao mentioned, Clothoid+Doll are a really great band, kinda heaveyish style tho... and Kana... she's unique, but a lot of people can't stand her voice (most claim she can't even sing, but that's because she has a really rock-ish type voice)
i think D[;di] would be PERFECT for you. very sort of 'bulesy' but with a really good feel to her stuff ^.^
you may also like DoAs Infinity.

but.... i can't find it now, but you mentioned 'kitchen utensils' and such....
someone tell me how to spell boadoms? please?
you need to listen to them, because... that's basically what they are
they make the most insane sound, it's really great.
but you also need to liten to Cali=Gari, as they are also completely insane, just in a more... 'song' type way (ie you can sing along and feel your not just contrubuting more 'random sounds' to the seemingly random music in the first place XD)
i think those guys would be very good for you

My fave band now is the White Stripes.
........ ☝...........
don't worry, you're still young, we can sort you out

um, i think you'd be an Art School fan (not that they're anything like the whict stripes *huggles them* never! ^^; ).
they're.... well i just aore them
hmm... but.... i'm going to kill myself after saying this....
you like the white strips... then go with Jinkaku radio *reaches for the knife*
2 member band (only one of them's a basist ) and they have SUPPORT members on drums and guitar.
they're like a version of the WS that actually WORKS!
(ok, i'm sorry if you feel i'm tottaly wripping into your fave band here.... i admit they have some decent riffs but other than that.... - but i'm not getting at you, just them, don't worry )
they have an AMAZINGLY unique sound, that is almost like they've encorarated sounds from east Africa with traditional Japanese music.... it's amazing the variety they come up with, and the singer's voice is DAMN powerful... it carried through my house even when the rest of the music doesn't
however, teh reason they're so difficult to get hold of, is they're one of those band's that more well known on the internet than in Japan, and they're hardly know on the internet as it is. but ontop of that, they hadn't released anything for 2 years and everything they had released was out of print. this summer, how ever, they released a new single, and we're hoping it'll be followed up by an album ^.^

pinkkillerkisou suddenly spews forth a list of lots more bands and then furan explains stuff - how do you say "excellent" in Japan?
it's not 'excelent' exactly, but you can say 'sugoi' ^.^ (litrally means 'cool' but you can use it in the same context i believe)

lol, and yeah.... we're odd like that... we even answer questions for eachother

but... what can i say, i like to type (shame i can't type all that well spelling wise, and then my reading it after is even worse...)

i'd be happy to send you a bunch of stuff.... however, the easiest way for us to all load things and d/l them is via YSI, which.... is being extreely huffy at this time....
megaupload works fine, but it takes a good long while to download from in comparrison... so i guess it depends on your connection speed....
if it's fast, i'll get started on stuff right away XD

lol, there's me babbling about not being able to read all you're comments, and then posting a whopper like this
i do appologise

The post in this thread are too long... I can't read. My brain is too overwhelmed.

wow

Pinkkiller: Now prepare to DIE from madness as I post my super-ultra-post!

I'm am impressed by Limonette - you seem really enthusiastic! 'tis a good thing And you've really found the right place, cause you'll really get your questions sorted out here (err.. not speaking about me being able to do so, but other, more talented people on this forum whom I love)

First of all: The White Stripes? Uhu. *nods head critically* No, actually, I don't think that's soo bad - furan seems to do so - I was actually listening to them before (some two years back) and I will say they DO make good songs. *hides from furan* - Both Jack and Meg are cool people who are obviously trying to do their own thing, and I like their whole 'independent'-style they have going on. Still... for me, the White Stripes didn't last long. I tired and tired and tired. :?

I feel the things I might recommend aren't as... 'hard' as some other bands recommended here. I'm not fully into very very verrrry hard, noisy music and I for one can't stand metal *hides yet again from possible metal-fans who will hang me up a tree* - but then again it all depends on the artist, some hard music I like, only then when I think it's really good I don't think about it as annoying-hard, but just good-hard. (I don't make sense, but just ignore that!)
Kra, is an example. They're not heavy - most of their songs are sort of 'happy' (although the lyrics might not) - and even though Keiyuu (vocal) can scream and shout, he still doesn't make the music into.. well.. the sort of music that just gets annoying cause they scream too much. Besides, Keiyuu doesn't scream all that much... he sings good! Kra are cuddly!

You MUST listen to Miyavi-sama!! *tackles you* Miyavi is my absolute, 10000%, no doubt favourite! He's the former guitarrist of the band Due le Quartz (also good) and is now solo. He's not Visual Kei anymore, but rather catchy rock or 'hot rock' as I call it.. His style varies though, and he's made some really popish, almost cute songs (like Ashita Genki/Tenki ni naare) and also some acoustic ones (that are great and lovely). His new album, however ('Miyavizm') is just rock - and it's really good! I've got it, I could upload it for you, if you feel interested. The single for that album was 'Freedom Fighters' - sort of a catchy tune, although, when it comes to Miyavi - there are tons and tons of good songs! *enthusiastic* I could list them, but it seems you just wanna hear about artists of various genres, and not actually.. or maybe I'm wrong? Off COURSE you'd wanna hear Miyavi-samas songs!? (Also, did I mention that Miyavi is the prettiest of them all? *hopes none of the others will bother to read this post*)

You say you're sort of into techno? What about electronica or synthezise-music? I'm not really into that at the moment, as I'm doing my absolute best to learn more about Jrock - but I know for sure Japan is THE country for electronica. They've got the whole TV-game-cute music going. It can actually be enjoyable. Tongari Kids made a hit this summer - I've got it on CD - but I don't know the songs name *curses kanji* It's a sort of remix of the traditional Mario-theme, with singing to it. It's sort of... strange. But good in an amusing way...

I guess then there's the Jpop - there's TONS and TONS of japanese pop out there *drowns in it* Hamasaki Ayumi for one, she's really famous - like madonna and Britney Spears in one (if you can imagine) And then there's the whole 'Hello Project' - pretty much a bunch of girls around the ages 12-20 who are divided into different subgroups, and do popish, really cute songs. Again, it's not really what I'm spending my time listening on right now, but if you like cute girls in fluffy dresses who sing 'Suki, suki, suki! Love, love, love! Happy, happy, happy!' I can definitely recommend them!

Gackt? You don't know him? Someone introduce Gackt! *orders people around* I.. I don't know much about him - at least not as much as other people on this forum. He's a great guy though - sort of 'Mr.Prefect' except for the dancing I haven't had the time to really listen to his songs a lot, but I've got a live with him where he sings 'Vanilla' - it's worth watching ! *dies*

Oh... and.. OH! We all forgot the most important group ever in Japanese music history!
The green leaves and the song YATTA! *laughs for three hours* Err... no one gets it? Oh. Ok, all I can say is; men wearing only LEAVES jumping around on stage singing 'Yatta, Yatta!' (yatta meaning something like 'Hooray!' or 'Gottcha!') sorry... I... I'll just have to send you the video for you to understand..

There are also the (now) famous '5,6,7,8s' - they're the rocker-girls who make sort of boogy-woogy music. Their songs appeared in Kill Bill (and THEY appeared in Kill Bill - as the band playing at that club in vol.1.) They're more cool than actually good, however...

Oh, look! *points at her own post* A whole, long post made up by someone with NO knowledge! Damn, I'm good! *faints*

Oh, and, thanks Limonette, for saying my siggy was nice. That's Miyavi, by the way, and he's also in my avatar.

This I must see!

I never heard of that before!

Kinsao said:

*opens new window and starts uploading 'Yatta'* You haven't heard of it!? It's a MUST see! *jumps around*

I'll give it to you soon as I can *right now* - let's just hope yousendit isn't being a *****

It sounds like one of our more interesting party charades...

It's great hearing your different tastes - it makes everybody unique and it gets me to know ya'all better. You can tell alot about a person in what kind of music movies comedy etc. they like. And some friends of mine have opposite musical tastes than me, but I find them brilliant in their own way.

What I like in the Whites Stripes - they remind me of things I liked before in 50's - 70's rock so it's also a sentimentality factor - American Detroit Rock city sound. Only instead of doing it in a blah way as so many bands do, they do it good. And I like Jack Whites voice - he can take a typical rock song and make it much more interesting.

I have to admit I haven't listened to their albums to judge the consitancy of their songwriting. But the quality of what I've heard already is good enough for me. I watch their videos and live performances. I am much to lazy right now to find cds and turn on the stereo - I just use my tv set - that's bad isn't it lol. My obsession with Japan will change that I'm sure.

Also I think Jack White is hot. And Meg is cool. And that makes it more interesting - that hot/cool factor.

Much as Pulp's Jarvis Cocker is warm, Russell Senior is cool - and they're both hot! Yes it makes it much more interesting lol. Hey that brings up the sexy factor - are they're any musicians you find particularly hot for whatever reason?

I love loud & noisy rock, but softer is nice too. It just depends on my mood.

Limonette said:
re they're any musicians you find particularly hot for whatever reason?

That....... is a mad question to ask on here.
Unless you want to die of nosebleeding, buried under a 7-million tonne mountain of pictures of reeeeallly hot jrockers....

(Actually... might not be such a bad way to die... :? )

*ahem* You can just look through... well, all of the threads on about the first 4 pages of here, I think!

Should I upload all like 1,200 pictures of Kaoru I have.

I want to start the foundation of the mountain... ooh me... me... I want to.

Limonette - imagine you are standing on top of a mountain, and you have just carelessly lobbed a snowball, merely out of the joys of living. Then stop and watch the resulting avalanche engulf 3 ski resorts.

I'm actually not sure.

I'm off to bed..................... *is really going*

Ooops LOL - I'M NOT READY TO DIE - (tho that wouldn't be a bad way to go.) I need to check out this stuff first.

Funny when I post elsewhere - the threads stop dead in their tracks. But here - it's much the opposite effect.

I don't know if I can handle this many hot guys at one time. I've only tried say oh well there's everyone in Pulp, that's 6, ok well one of them is a girl but she's cute for a girl, plus all the Kids in the Hall, that's 5, plus Spacehog - 4 more, and Christopher Walken....Ryuichi Sakamoto, Gotaro Tsunashima, Motoki Kobayashi, Conan O'Brien, Becks really cute...Fareed Zakaria, Peter Beinart, and so on - that's quite alot, but I don't know if I can handle an avalanche... Plus on top of that - it's hard enough living next door to all the hot guys in Canada, if you know what I mean.

Wow that is a rambling sentence - Mojo Jojo would be proud.

Limonette said:

*claps hands together* I thought you'd NEVER ask! Let's get to it then, shall we? Oh.. and.. if you wanna see hot/sexy/pretty/wonderful - go visit the "a poll for the prettiest jrocker"-thread. There you'll find .. 548359437 pics of deadly pretty japanese artists. And: don't forget to vote! AND: you can choose more than ONE person - but, since I... *sparkly eyes* .. told you to go there, VOTE MIYAVI!!! No, seriously. Do it.

Jack White can put a potato sack over his head: Miyavi would MELT him with his pure smexiness-beauty if they were in the same room!
Just please feel free to examine him closely!

*nosebleed* I know.. it hurts.. *whimper*

... I think Jack White just got served...

You know what... I sure wish we had non-japanese music forum. There are some people I'm dying to introduce. I would love to share non-japanese music and show some gorgeous non-japanese men.

show them ! I could use some gorgeous non-japanese men, for I have started doubting their very existance. Oh dead. I have fallen victim for the japanese men... *pretends to be sad*
