The six companies are suspected of sharing information via email and meetings over several years to coordinate the timing and scale of increases in recommended retail prices for ice cream and other frozen desserts. This is the first time Japan's Fair Trade Commission has investigated a suspected price-fixing cartel in the ice cream industry.
Investigators are also examining whether the companies used inflation as an opportunity to raise recommended prices beyond what could be justified by higher costs. Although recommended retail prices are not binding, retailers often use them as a reference when setting store prices, the sources said. Ezaki Glico acknowledged the investigation and said it was cooperating fully with the Fair Trade Commission.
