I would like to ask here about another of the most tricky topics of Japanese society. Even with a few comments I got face to face from Japanese people, I think I don't understand enough why there is such discrimination against Burakumin and what is the nature of this prejudice. Not less idyllicaly enough, in Europe we have a somewhat similar problem of discrimination against Romani people, but I guess these might be rather considerably different phenomenons.
Here my questions:
Is the ancient superstition of considering Burakumin as being spiritualy impure playing a part in their modern discrimination?
Is there some kind of driscrimination for them from the Shinto shrines or the Buddhist temples?
Do most Burakumin live somewhat separated from mainstream society (living in their own neighborhoods, marrying and relating mostly with themselves)?
Are Burakumin often associated of having criminal tendencies and of mingling with bosozoku gangs or yakuza?
Are most Burakumin living in a much more poor economic conditions than the average Japanese?
Is there among them some "proud of being Burakumin" (with some kind of Burakumin culture involved -like fashion, specific hip hop groups, slang, etc)?
Do most Burakumin want to be Burakumin or they want to be dissolved into the Japanese mainstream society?
When an ordinary Japanese citizen thinks about a Japanese person being either petty criminal, robber, pickpocket, hooligan, small-time drug-traffiker or yakuza, is she or he to be imagining first a Burakumin filling these types?
Are Burakumin thought to be naturally "tough people" in a way?
Do some Japanese people think that a regular person cannot trust them?
Because of the noticeable relation between Burakumin rights movements and the Japanese Communist Party, are Burakumin considered by some to be unpatriotic?
