I was in Alaska in 2002 just in time to experience a pretty strong earthquake (7.9 in the Richter scale). I thought I was going to become one more victim of mother nature, because the B & B where I was staying was shaking really badly.
To protect myself, I did one of the things we are taught in Mexico, and that is to stand under a door frame, but it was as though I was standing under straws. When the quake stopped, I went outside to check what was going on, but nobody seemed to be alarmed. It was an interesting experience, but not one I would like to live again.

Two hours ago news magazines reported over 23'000 dead for the whole south asian region (some Indian news magazines reported over 30'000). Even some parts of Africa were hit by the same tsunamis (caused by a seaquake magnitude 9!). Horrible tragedy, I'm at a loss for words.

Last I heard it was 23,000 or so, and they expected it to rise considerably, as there's thousands missing. That was an earthquake out at sea -- think if it was on land.... crushed buildings, THEN tsunami.

Actually if the quake had happened on dry land the tsunami probably wouldn't have been so bad. The reason it was so powerful is because of the magitude of the quake displacing such a large amount of water. Millions of gallons of water displaced into all different directions, that is why so many countries were affected.

Hehe, I live in Alaska, in Anchorage. During the quake I was sitting in keyboarding, I was in the 9th grade. Me and my friend kind of just looked at each other and the wobbling windows and then whent back to work after it stopped.

There was a few bad ones while I was in Japan last year, I think Sendai got hit bad which we really felt at my school, the girls I was training with at the time started screaming and I was laughing my head off, I just felt that these 17yr old girls who have lived with this their whole lives panicing at a resonably small earthquake was funny

Japan Sends 3 MSDF Ships to Tsunami-Hit Thailand

The Japanese government is sending three Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels to Thailand to help in the search for people missing in the sea following tsunamis triggered by Sunday's massive earthquake in Indonesia.

A supply ship and two destroyers, one equipped with a helicopter, are now heading to the Thai resort island of Phuket, which was hard hit by the huge waves. The mission is in response to a request by the Thai government for help in search and rescue operations.

The three vessels were on the way back to Japan from a mission providing logistical support to US-led operations in and around Afghanistan.

They are expected to arrive off Phuket by noon on Wednesday local time, and will immediately start search operations.
