Unless you're at a high level, trying to use 100% Japanese listening materials is going to be very frustrating. Maybe you can mimic tone and intonation, but huge amounts of nuance and meaning will go over your head. Better to have a guide in your own language.
Their high level lessons can be very challenging. Long and fast. They had one lesson done in an older man's casual dialect, and it made me feel like a beginner. I hadn't often heard that accent or way of speaking, since it was so far off of professional or textbook Japanese. It was like how I imagine a Japanese person might hear an Irish person's English.

Adult Japanese's Kanji writing ability is about an elementary school Chinese children. They almost never know how to write cursive in everyday life, so you can always read it easily.

What myself and friends in Japan who are from China find is that educated Japanese are just as capable although kanji usage is slightly different.
Also cursive in everyday life? Obviously you haven't been in either countries, it was true in my parents generation but almost nobody writes cursive anymore since computers have taken over.
The most educated children can write 行書 at best but i would say children in both countries have equally childish writing these days.
The one area I find Chinese parents do focus more on than Japanese parents is Classical Chinese poems or 漢詩 which starts in primary school in China but 中学校 in Japan. Chinese parents often recite these to their children since toddlerhood.
春眠暁を覚えず、処処啼鳥を聞く is famous in both countries but there are poems that are only popular in China like
鵝 鵝 鵝，
曲項天に向ひて歌ふ
白毛綠水に浮き，
紅掌淸波を撥く
Understandable since these things are practically another language for Japanese children and they have native Japanese poems 俳句 they need to concentrate on in the meantime instead of 絶句 etc.
