Yes. Also, there is plenty of incentive for stopping mafia. The overall cost of imprisoning, say, one drug dealer, is much less than the potential cost that would be incurred by the usage of his product: damage of property and lives. Allowing a drug dealer to continue plying his trade is like saying, "Sure, you can have all of our bored teenagers. It's not like they were ever going to contribute to society anyway."

And incentive comes in the form of more than just money alone. It's not an issue of profit: it's an issue of, "Is this a threat to the people I care about?", which many would argue is of far greater incentive than money.

If the statement was instead, "Our biggest problem is lack of resources," that might be one step closer to the truth, but the fact is you can't point at any one thing and say, "This is our biggest problem." There are so many issues that contribute to it all; they feed off each other.

If I go on, things are going to get super political, and I hate politics, so I'm just going to leave that there.

Wow. Can the Emperor not do anything about it? How could he sit back and let them do that, without at least making a formal request that they stop? Or are they actually doing what he wants done, but cannot officially do?

Sounds kinda scary to me.

The royal family in Japan has no real power to do much of anything. Basically just figureheads that serve to maintain some semblance of "tradition" They do not really have much political sway. It is just the way it is

So much for Yakuza meaning "Sword of The Emperor" then.

Do you really think they would not obey Him if he officially asked them to cease and desist?

They are hurting his followers and his nation.

The Japanese who still believe in him, and loyal to him, would take care of the yaks who disobey him wouldn't they?

Or is their no Japanese loyal to the Emperor anymore, in spite of his "official" status after WWII?

After WWII the us removed him from power, and he was only emperor by title. Also i am willing to bet that if the yakuza would "cease and desist" by the emperor simply asking them to, then he probably would have by now.

Though many Yakuza still have great national pride and yearn for the old days of a more imperialistic Japan, to most members of the Yakuza, it is just a job. Like any other job, they go to work, have assigned roles, have superiors, co-workers, office parties, meetings etc.... Granted much of what they do might in some cases be considered "illegal" but really, the mob here almost NEVER foes out of their way to cause trouble for normal citizens. UNLESS they have done something to warrant harrasment. In fact, most of the members of organized crime I have met and know and quite polite and affable gentlemen to be quite honest. They often uphold traditonal values that embody the traditional Bushido teachings of how a man should be. Because of this, a lot of people have a kind of romantic and nostalgic feelings towards them and that way of life. Again, I'm not advocating some of the things they do and I wouldn't reccomend borrowing money from them unless you REALLY know what you are doing but in MOST cases, the Yakuza would almost NEVER premeditatedly cause trouble for a foreigner. It simply wouldn't be good for buisness

Quite honestly, I am way more apprehensive and afraid of the police here in Japan than the Yakuza. The cops WILL go out of their way to harass foreigners.

I WOULD like to thank you for stalking me around the site. It appears you have a keen intrest in what I have to say. Cheers! Though again, I would advise that responding in such a bland and uninteresting manner doesn't lend itself to having a discussion or amicable discourse on whatever topic is on the table. I would assume after so many posts you would realize that? But perhaps you feel you are above it all and don't want to bother with dignifying a newbies stupid posts with a response. That would be typical and rather uninteresting. So again, please, if you have something intelligent to say I would love to hear it!! Your comments are far from the reality of how things really are here and is typical of someone with a little knowledge goes a long way syndrome.

And if you know what you are doing it would be ok to borrow money from an organisation as you suggest? And by what do you mean "know what you are doing"?

Those threads I posted in are threads that I have posted in before you, so even though your "stalker" comment is flattering, do realise that I am not following any particular trend.

Oh , I forgot to mention, I mostly only reply when half informed opinions or statements are put forward, so it may seem that I am stalking you when the reality is far from this. Cheers

Sure. People are free to make bad decisions and good decisions. As long as you understand that you will most likely be obligated to pay back much much more than you borrow and if you need the money to start an enterprise that you are fairly certain will bring in enough coin to your coffers and can pay it back why not. Not everyone is able to borrow money using the usual channels.

Personally I think it is. Lets look at how you conducted yourself here in the past few days. You basically entered the forum calling the Japanese bigoted, ignorant and corrupt based on ridiculously flimsy evidence. To me you're a troll. Then when you are called on it, you claim we're uncivil in an unsuccessfully pithy reply.

Seriously give it a break.

Thanks, I didn't realise I was that good, but a compliment is a compliment.

I apologise if I was coming across too harsh, but there are too many extremists who come here with one agenda and frankly, I am sick of it. Not throwing you in the same bunch of people, but some of your opinions sparked a response from me.

Given the chance, a chinpira will go out of his way to fleece a common citizen out their hard earned cash. Just the smallest fender bender can turn into thousands of dollars after being harassed constantly ,always living fear until the next time they come around.

But, My reply was mainly dirrected towards the police comment.

I don't believe that I have ever heard Dave say he is a nice, humble guy. However he is intelligent and informed, as I have learned first had from conversations I have had from him.

As for your opinion being uninformed, I cannot say much as mine is too, but if you knew what you were talking about you would have given examples, or an article, or something that would show us what you say is true. usually when someone doesn't give examples they do not know what they are talking about.

Hehe! Nah, I'm really not that extremist in my views, I was just trying to start up a lively conversation is all. I TOTALLY agree with you about chinpiras fleecing common folk. Those are the acts you have to watch out for. However, real yakuza generally don't engage in that kind of thing. Chinpira while MAYBE having some association with organized crime are really just lower echelon goons that engage in petty crimes and intimidation. Again, I actually appreciate your responses and have been enjoying the banter back and forth.

Yes, he seems to be at that. (Intelligent and informed). My opinions are based on my own eral life experiences and as such may not have "data" to back up with but then thats a rather abstract road to go down. The problem with quoting facts and figures though is you can always find something to support what you say and something that goes totally against it. Though, you're right, I should have provided something concrete. Will keep that in mind Cheers!

Actually, I entered the forum with an introduction followed up by a request for help regarding lyric translation. After that, Yes, I expressed an opinion that Japanese society from a western perspective is one that oppress women and is what many Westerns would call bigoted. (I don't believe I used the words ignorant or corrupt but thanks for putting words in my mouth) I have no idea who you are since we have not engaged in any kind of dialouge. I have no idea how uncivil or civil you are. I mean, I have no opinion about it. Sorry if that comment sounded like I was trying to lump everyone in the same boat. It wasn't the intention. Good usage of the word "pithy" by the way I haven't heard that in ages!

Did the Japanese people lose all faith in and loyalty to the Emperor after WW2, just because he lost his official power and position in government matters?

Based on the research I have done, the yakuza consider themselves loyal to the Emperor...unofficially of course. How does he view them? Has he ever said?

Same with the police...do they consider themselves loyal to the emperor in any way?

No worries Tabitha, you were in no way involved with the argument. Beside, there is no way to get people from as many different cultures as we have on Jref and not have arguments.

Also, I would assume that the Japanese are more respectful than loyal to the emperor, but I do not know for sure.

Me either. But what I gathered is he is about the same as a pope. In which case, it is nearly impossible to remove his power. Loyal devils can serve a useful purpose when you have things you want or need done, yet cannot officially do, or be connected with. The Yakuza seem to have brought in a bunch of money to Japan from all over the world.

Here in Australia, some of the chinese are so fierce, even the younger now, they related themselves with the chinese triad.
Yeah regenerations, they are around 19 - 30 years old now, even in uni.

Even the famous surgeon Victor Chan, and the parliamentary member of Australia, were shot to death by them around 1996. It is not a good practice. Yeah, there are some extremely different values between Japanese and Chinese, that underlying the triad basis.

I think some of the Australia have a very deep hatred to them, and they might sweep them away, like before in Cronulla Riots.

As far as I know, Yakuza's scope of business is focused on domestic market as their capability of international intelligence is quite poor. In Japan, Yakuza is a low-end.
