Do Japanese vending machines secretly judge us?

Every time I buy my 3rd can of Boss Coffee at midnight, I swear the vending machine looks disappointed.
Anyone else feel like Japan's machines have personalities? Or do I just need more sleep?

Drinking caffeinated coffee at midnight won't help your sleep.
Unless you work night shifts…

I could drink a couple of espressos before bed with no effect and sleep just fine. I must have the CYP1A2 gene which means I metabolise caffeine very quickly and/or don't have the required number of receptors in my brain to give me that buzz and wakefulness. I drink 568ml of coffee in the morning just because I like the taste but that's all for the rest of the day. Once I drank three large, strong coffees in a hotel at breakfast, trained at an Iai seminar and had disturbing palpitations but that's all I've ever experienced. When I was a PhD student, doing interminably dull data gathering and analysis in a darkened lab I noticed a jar of pure caffeine crystals on the shelf of other reagents. I was tempted to eat a teaspoonful to keep alert but after a few back -of-an-envelope calculations, realised that'd kill me very quickly!

If I drink caffeine in the evening, I don't necessarily have trouble sleeping but the problem is that I don't really feel like sleeping so I may be up until 1 or 2 before I realize I need to go to bed. Once I'm in bed, I'll fall asleep. But I have noticed if I drink coffee regularly I'll get caffeine withdrawal headaches when I skip a day. So now I drink decaf almost exclusively. And then I'll have an afternoon Coca-Cola pick me up after lunch to help get me back to a functioning level. So that means I'm getting about 34mg of caffeine/day which seems to be low enough not to cause the caffeine withdrawal headache.

It's probably disappointed that you're only on can #3. Vending machines need your business, you know!

So it makes you forgetful…?

Ononism helps…

They are terrible…not excruciating, just nigglingly annoying.

You know they extract the caffeine with plutonium and ebola virus?

I heard a great programme on BBC Radio4 about caffeine. The suggestion was that most of society is addicted to what is a psychoactive drug, but it's a 'transparent' effect that allows normal functioning. Fascinating.
