Difference between 増加する and 上がる？

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forums

I've been learning Japanese for a while now, and started my Japanese Studies degree in September last year.

Nuances between words always frustrate me a little, so I'm hoping someone can help me here ^_^

I've just learnt the differences between 上る、上がる、and 上げる。And their opposites 下る、下がる、and 下げる.

From what I understand, 上がる can be used to say something such as 'The temperature has risen'. Would replacing 上がる with 増加する or 増える be correct? Is there some nuance between each word?

I'd appreciate any examples you can give to help me further understand. Thanks!

Not really. 高くなる is used for temperature, not 増加する or 増える.

I suspect it may be a difference between countable and uncountable nouns.

上がる/高くなる: 気温, 物価, 人気, 能力
上がる/高くなる/増える: 給料, 確率, 価値

hm... Probably there is something that makes difference.


Anyway, @ the OP, 上がる has so many meanings, as you can see in the dictionary linked below, and 増える/増加する are just overlapping with it partially.
