News Diabetic dies in police custody after suffering abuse, neglect

According to the source, footage from a surveillance camera in the detention cell showed a senior official at Okazaki Police Station in the city of Okazaki entering the room and kicking the 43-year-old man as he lay tied up. Multiple police staff have already come under suspicion of assaulting the detainee. The man could not use a toilet as he was tied up with "belt handcuffs" and rope while unclothed. It has become clear that a staff member flushed the toilet while the back of the man's head was in the toilet bowl. The police station is suspected of neglecting necessary medical measures, such as having a doctor examine the man, though he had diabetes and schizophrenia. It is said that police had given him medication for the mental disorder. Still, an employee in charge of detention said they had forgotten about diabetes.

The [victim's] father learned in a 28 November phone call from Okazaki Police Station that his son had been arrested three days earlier. He had filed a missing person report because he had been unable to contact his son for several days. It is believed that the son lost his way home and asked someone for directions, and they called the police because he looked suspicious.
