def in Japan: a comic diary

Ah shucks, thanks

That strip in particular was for two weeks back, and I was on the verge of not posting it anywhere, since it seems close to sucking up for attention... But it also seems to be a common problem for artists on sites like DevArt and Tumblr, so it seemed worth writing. That was mostly about Facebook and Tumblr, where I'm starting to focus my attention. For this site, I'm happy with the interest, even if not everyone writes... Truth is, I do the same when reading others work, artists are just vain.
 
I love killing time at the park more and more. Shame the bad weather is coming soon.
 
What a sweet strip. Your daughter is very lucky to have such a cool dad. I could only imagine what my childhood would have been like if my parents were artists, or even just enthusiastic about art in general -- That sort of thing can do wonders to nurture a child's imagination, which is something I think we see hardly enough of. Maybe one day she'll be a great artist and the two of you can collaborate!
 

Thanks. I somewhat subscribe to the Patton Oswalt school of parenting, where being uncool helps make cooler kids. (google it if you haven't heard the routine). All the same, my daughter will be happy to have some of her childhood captured in comic form.

Start of a new thing, as the diary continues. This is enormously difficult to do... admitting, capturing, and sharing. I have no idea how universal it is. But I'll need to explore further. Race affects all of us (or else I'm just in denial).
 
Bought back memories.

In my childhood and younger years , all you heard were dumb pollak , nigger , spic , wop , dirty jew , etc. jokes. Until I joined the navy , all I had met were "white" kids. My school years were "pure" white. I remember when a returning serviceman with a Korean wife and "Asian" looking child moved into our neighborhood ; no one had anything to do with them. The standing joke back then was Maine was too cold for non-whites to live here. When I see and hear things about prejudice in the south of the US , I think the north had even them beat. I am very happy things are no longer so hateful here.
