guys I need your help with something
I'm learning Japanese and I REALLY need a Japanese-English dictionary-AS A BOOK- NOT -as a website-

the vocabularies might be categorized by the radicals of the kanjis or something

please if you know any dictionary like that .. write its name and I'll search for it in my country and if I couldn't find it I'll just order it online

Hello SH04! I am well, thanks for asking.

I joined a Japanese class recently and my sensei recommended the Kenkyusha Japanese Dictionary to me because it provides more word use examples that most dictionaries that she had used previously. I have yet to pick it up though to have a strong opinion of it.


However, I also use Berlitz Japanese Compact Dictionary (ISBN: 9789812469489) for on the spot stuff while on holiday as well as class. This one has all kanji listed in the front in stroke number order, but the dictionary itself is set up like most Japanese to English book formats. As long as you have a good jist of hiragana and katakana, this won't be a problem.

So, the second book you've mentioned the " Berlitz Compact Dictionary " .. fortunately I've mastered the Kana (Hiragana-Katkakan) so I guess it'll be easy for me to use as you said .. so how awesome is it ?? I mean could you please describe how did you use it ? based on what ? and I would appreciate it if you write me one simple example please

let's say.. I was reading something and this world came up to me : "肌" .. how would you search for its meaning ? keeping in your mind that it's not furiganized in the book I'm reading

I understand what you're saying. It is also a problem I may face at times too considering I am also a newbie at kanji.

With the kanji listing at the front of the Berlitz dictionary, you can first track down that particular kanji character... the romanized word used for the kanji is listed along side each one (in this dictionary anyway) which you can break down into hiragana alphabetic...er, bits, lol.

I will look up your given example of 肌. Let's see how far I get (for my first time, I have seen my boyfriend do it before though!)!

I'm going to take a guess at that being a 6 stroke kanji character (I have a very rough idea how it may have been written which does help!).

Found it! It says "Hada" for 肌 ... now I will look up "Hada"... That exact kanji means "skin".

Does that step by step break down put you at ease? Time consuming I know as well.. but when we both know more kanji, we'll be flying then!
I'm quite delighted that I found that translation all on my own! LOL XD ^-^;;;

some people call me "Shosho" as a nickname .. so I thought of removing the second part and make it short and cute .. so it's "Sho" ;p
