Christianity in Japan during the 1940s

I just read Ayako Miura's Shiokari Pass and was touched by the book. I've been writing this new novel lately and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the condition of Christianity in Japan during the 1940s. Was there still prejudice against the religion at the time? 'coz Mrs. Miura's novel seemed to suggest as such. The terms 'Yaso', it was used, right?

On another note,

do japanese people celebrate christmas even though they're not christians? (eg. shinto religion, 1940s)

and does anyone know about some basic buddhist rituals (eg weddings, engangement, births, birthdays, funerals, etc)

I am aware that Christianity was frowned on in the years just before and during WW2. I'll check out some things and try to get back with you as soon as I can, but that may take a while--I've got a lot to do.

In our dozo (an old thick mud-walled storage house, or keep) I have found many very old books. One of them is a copy of the New Testament, 1886 printing, starting from the 'back' as it would seem, and using strange names for all the books. It's gotta be very rare.

It needs to be noted that Buddhism was also frowned upon during WWII in Japan. This pre-war anti-Buddhist sentiment has been said to continue today in Japan.

After the war, anti-Shinto sentiment became prevalent. (Many people linked the failure of the war to Shintoism.) As a result, most of organized religion has "lost face" with the Japanese people.
