Question Can 〜ているつもり mean "intend to do"?

Hi. Does this bold ているつもり mean "intend to do…" in this context? Or can ているつもり mean "intend to do…"? I always think it can only mean "one thinks she/he is doing…, but the reality is different". If it does mean "intend to do" in this context, why isn't 起きるつもり used?

Yes and yes.

Probably you are confusing ～するつもりだ with ～するつもりだった.

Because 起きる is a punctual verb. While 起きる means "to wake up from sleep", 起きている is "to be/stay awake".

Thank you. I'm not sure if there is any difference between ～するつもりだ with ～するつもりだった. But my book says 〜た/〜ているつもりだ means "one thinks she/he is doing…, but the reality is different".

I believe you already learned the difference between 7時まで起きている and 7時に起きる. つもり doesn't change this difference. That's why 起きている is used there, not 起きる.

～た/～ている is not a necessary condition for that meaning. It's OK to use "A Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns for Teachers and Learners" as a reference book, but I don't recommend using it as a textbook. It doesn't contain detailed explanations, so it often confuses learners as a result.
