Recently there are a couple of things that raised the chance of a big quake in/near the Tokyo/Kanagawa region this year.
  • In history, always if there has been a large quake in/near Sichuan (>7.3) as it was on May 12th, there has been a big one in Japan the same year
    1948 06 28 - Fukui, Japan - M 7.3
    1948 05 25 - Sichuan, China - M 7.3
    1933 08 25 - Sichuan, China - M 7.4
    1933 03 02 - Sanriku, Japan - M 8.4
    1927 05 22 - Tsinghai, China - M 7.6
    1927 03 07 - Tango, Japan - M 7.6
    1923 09 01 - Kanto (Kwanto), Japan - M 7.9
    1923 03 24 - Near Luhuo, Sichuan, China - M 7.3
  • There are quite many small quakes in front of Tokyo bay recently.
In 1923, there were 200-300 quake just before the Kanto quake.
  • One day a after the Sichuan quake, the ion measurement in Kanagawa exceeded the measurement scale, and it seems to continue. There are three stations visible on the e-Pisco webpage where one in Kanagawa showed significantly the largest peak.
The ion measurement is not always related to EQ's, there are many false alarms, but as it is just one day after the quake in China makes it interesting. The technology is based on changes in the magnetic field. The magnetic field is generated if rocks inside the earth are compressed. In such a case, they get semiconductend and generate high currents, that can be measured by the ions.
  • Another source forecasts an M7 quake near Chiba this month
This source is however very related to fortune-telling and not reliable

You will find a lot on earthquakes...............

in the post titled "Predicting Earthquakes" by user member rahul bhatnagar. I think there were 4 or 5 pages on it.

Well, I would like to mention that the presented data is not just based on a vague assumption; especially the ion-measurement is serious research and there are large projects going on in the US like the quakefinder system.

Recently there has been a news in Infoseek about this where the board chairman for EQ research in Osaka city University warns from a possibe Kanto EQ.
