Best way to learn is a teacher, although I did it the hard way at about age 13 and picked songs/chords off records. Fastest way is the teacher if you can afford it. Along the way, you'll learn how to read music, which really helps later on if you'd like to start learning theory. Reading music is not absolutely necessary (there've been hot debates on this subject in other forums) but helps a lot when you've advanced a long way. (a good story-teller doesn't have to know how to read words).
As for the guitar, do you want to play electric or acoustic?
