How is different? Plastic Surgery alters how one looks to please someone (themselves or someone else) and altering genes does the same thing just before birth. How is that much different at all?

Someone, as an adult, choses to have plastic surgery done. They are able to make decisions for themselves. The unborn child cannot decide if they want their genes to be altered or not.

A lot of adults don't chose, they give into the pressure to be perfect. And yes, the unborn cannot choose. And yes, it is horrible. But to scientists and most people it's simply the "next logical step in human evolution" The problem is it's the opposite of that. It's got nothing to do with evolution. Unfortunatly to a lot of people it's still the next logical step.

Yes, let's make lots of perfect people for the better of mankind and just ignore all the people who can't afford it. We'll start a Ugenics War over it and all the inperfect will be killed by the perfect. Yes, isn't that just grand?

Giving into pressure, as far as I'm concerned, might as well be the same as chosing. Who is to blame, then? Society, for the pressure it places on people to look like this or that, or the people who chose plastic surgery, as a way to relieve this pressure? It's both, isn't it?

I don't think a lot of people think it's the next logical step. To me, most people appear to be against genetic modification, cloning, anything like that.
I don't think "perfect people" should be created. And, honestly, I don't think it will happen that soon, if at all.

I think that her eyes are really exaggerated in the third pic, especially by the way her eyeliner is done. But they are unusually BIG.

I agree, I took that pic as an example cause it showed the contrast. However, that pic might even be meddled with by computers afterwards, cause it looks soo strange... Nice pic you posted - she's better a brunette than a blonde.

Well said, Hyde! I agree - and I'm as horrified and annoyed as you when it comes to altering genes. I am sure this will be a very much possible and common thing to do in near future. However, I don't think we'll all be doomed because of it. Remember that what humans find beautiful is what most people don't have - we just work that way. Thus, asians like BIG eyes, western people (actually.. ALL westernized civilizations) like skinny people (since it's difficult to keep in shape with all that junk food around). IN the 18th century, everyone admired a fat lady, cause she was considered healthy and rich enough to afford lots of food (something far from all people could in the 18th century) ... IF we started medling with genes on a regular basis, to make 'perfect' humans - well, after a while, these 'perfect' humans wouldn't be considered 'perfect' . Our ideals would change. However, what new ideals we'd get I couldn't say. And that still doesn't mean I'm supporing the art of altering genes. However, we mustn't forget that gene science is important on many other aspects that when it comes to looks. Gene studies and altering could help sick people.

And, honestly, I don't think it will happen that soon, if at all.

WAIT! Ayu has nothing with altering genes to do! I like her! And I don't CARE about her plastic surgery. It's her choice.

Do you really honest to God believe that if given the chance to make their babies smarter, prettier, or whatever that parents would simply say no? Humans have some self control but not that much self control.
And I'm not saying the peopel would actually be Perfect, I'm using it as a term that will probably be adopted once this mess unfolds.
And I am also just repeating what some of the very scientist who are working on this say will happen. Many of them know they're starting a war. Maybe not a war with guns and bombs but still a war. Racism will extend to those who have been altered or not. It can only make the problems our race has worse. It starts with things as small as a tommy tuck here, a face lift there but slowly, oh so very slowly, turns into something that I would feel no guilt in calling an epidemic.

Agreed. Even if the situation seemes "impossible unless I...." it's the same when it comes to smoking or drugs. Even with peer pressure, unless someone physicly held you down and performed surgery on you/pumped smoke into your lungs/stuck a needle in your arm, it is actually your choise.
Some people have more streanght. I think it's stupid, but I still it's their life, let them do whatever they want.
Oh, and I think Ayu looks psychotic, and not in the good kind of way. Though the brunette pic is quite allright, and the noodle pic is really cute!
But you shouldn't judge people by their looks, I still say it's not my kind of music.

i don't whant to bring up the whole argument and everything... BUT, if they do introduce genetic enginering into babies... there will be HUGE debates on wether to leagalise it, which will inevitably lose for general use. it will be used to prevent genetic deseases and serious formation problems, it will NOT be used for the kind of thing... yes it will be expencive, but it will be limitted an only certain Doctor will be able to perform it, like abortion, but i don't think they'll let it get as out of hand as that has.
ok, so a baby may have been altered, but the science world is a LONG way from being able to actually read gene sequences into knowing how to do what's been proposed to spacific wishes, and that baby they altered, they have no idea what's going to happen to it later on... we can't even clone successfully, which is just a simple matter of taking unaltered set of chromosomes from the body, and replasing them with the half chromosome set in an unfertilised egg, so... it'a a long way away yet...

also, what i ment before by saying the makeup, is it's still changing your appearence... i wear eyeliner, but i'm not as obsesive as most people i know, it's to alter my appearence for me, not for otheres, but it's still altering my appearence...
genetic engeneraing is very different to plastic surgery, because no matter what, the features will be "natural", they cannot be hand crafted, there will not be plastic added to them, and their skin will have all the blamishes and scares of time as any other 'natural' humanbeing.....
