I'm an atheist and I am interested to know what public reaction Japan takes when they encounter one.

From the response I have read on this forum and other places the Japanese don't really care about your religion. It is a very secular country and they probably wouldn't make a big deal out of it.
I see on your profile you are from the US and I hear and read on AN (Atheist Network) that admitting you are an atheist in some parts of the US can be as bad as saying you kill kittens for fun, so I can see why you might want to know what it would be like in another country. Strangly enough North America is one of the few places in the western world where an atheist would cause problems with getting employment and not if you are a bible bashing, YEC yahoo. Don't even get that problem in Europe, even in the more "religious" countries such as Italy or Poland.

Atheism is nothing new to Japan; religion there is more along the lines of tradition and ceremony. If it comes up in conversation, no one will bat an eye if you say you're atheist; You're more likely to be eyed suspiciously if you proclaim that Jesus Christ is your lord and savior, and ask them if they've been "saved" too.

Didn't know atheism was "shunned" in some areas of NA. Really didn't expect that.
Well lol, I've heard churchgoing people swear and curse in Hungary, even use the word "God" in the process, so I suppose it goes in the neighboring countries too.

I'm surprised too that the US would treat Atheists so harshly...aren't there anti descrimination laws when it came to religion or lack there of? I thought you had the freedom to believe or not believe in a god without having to be ostracised or discriminated against.

Atheists are ostracized and discriminated against in some parts of the U.S., but all of that would be hard to prove in court. I mean, it's like my hometown. Some people wouldn't hire a Native American, but were anyone to ever bring it up, they'd just say they chose the best applicant, and that no Natives were hired was just coincidence.

In some parts of the U.S. there were angry demonstrations against evolution being taught in science class. I think most people that live in those parts and don't share those beliefs move to places where they are accepted rather than take things to court.

I've read and responded to a similar post by you on another thread. It sounds to me like that you are TRYING to get reactions from others by announcing that you are an atheist.

Sorry if I am out of line here but I can't help but smelling a little bit of jevenile martyr fantasy. I suppose it is common for a young person to want to advertise how different he/she is and how miserable his/her life is because of it.

Gee whiz, I don't know where atheists are shunned or treated poorly in the USA. You think too highly of yourself Antdog5. Atheism is nothing new, and trust me, most people couldn't care less what you do or don't believe in. My great uncle was a judge in Milwaukee and he was an atheist. It's not new and you are not special and no one cares. Seems like you are the one making a big deal out of it. Get over yourself already.
