Are westerners too overrated in japan??

I don't understand why the westerners are worshipped so much?
Is it a fashion trend? What is so great about being western?

I'va asked many a Japanese person.
I can never get a straight answer.

I think its a mixture of being percieved as cool and with some young Japanese wanting to rebel against their own culture.

I've seen R&J live... Mercutio has always been my favorite character from any Shakespeare play, save Puck from A Midsummer Nights Dream... its sort of funny to me, but the best performance of Puck I've ever seen depicted the character as female

I think it's more because we are a cultural melting pot. And with that being said, many cultures mix together creating a united fashion and subculture of their own. Many people in America probably made their lives as beat boxers or break dancers which may have amazed other countries that such a diverse area with many different races could have a subculture bring people together. It may be many other things. Many westerners are amazed with eastern places because of their formality and their traditions that they keep along with pratices and religion.
 
Kamisama, I agree with your statements. I would add that it seems to be a basic trait of human nature to be curious about people, cultures, and places that are different from what we know, and I think that has contributed to the success of the marketing of Western popular culture to other parts of the world through the cinema, television, and music.

But the Yanks are beasts. I must oppose the idea that as asians we always have to bow to a nation that treats humans as animals. Until the Americans can behave themselves by not using military force all the time as the military should only be used as last resort. In Iraq, the Yank have indiscriminatly killed innocents ranging from infants to elderly. Attrocities such as the Abu Gharib rape has been publicised. Yanks kill and cannabalise, Yanks are proud of that because Yanks are Yanks. Yet, the Yank has not shown sympathy, no regret, no remorse, no apology, no pity. The Yank philosophy is "the strong rule the weak".

The Yanks just want to kill anyone that is "not-white" period.

When did "westerner" become synonymous with American? Last time I checked, a bunch of European kids were getting the same treatment as Americans because of one major factor: they're not Japanese.

Simple they're parctically worshipped all over the world by non white people simply because....they've propagated themselves as being the greatest people on earth, heroic, sharming blah blah blah all that stuff we see on T.V. Generations of it self praise and propagation will eventually captivate the weak minded into thinking they're the only good guys in the world. Plus if WE dont treat them really well wherever they go, they'll somehow cause a civil war or something in our respective countries or use the media to draw us out as bad people so that they can kill at will the "bad non westerner". All in all I think Japanese people are pretty stupid when it comes to falling head over heels for westerners or better "white guys". ..........By the way, I'm part caucasion so I aint a racist or anything just a watcher with a big mouth!

Why is it that we are allowed to have free speech but when it comes to free speech which ticks off westerners it's no longer allowed to be called free speech, but rather racism? Westerners called the whole world names in the past and still do. I suggest y'all read up on some history and drop your stupid arguments of emotional words, cliches and catch phrases. Pick up a history text book and see all the warlords of history summed up in western culture of today.

And no, I don't just like japanese culture so that I can get wit some japanese girl.....heh that's new from a westerner!
 

Heh. I won't deny Westerners have done their share. But as far things go here, we're just trying our best to keep things objective. You'd be amazed at how easily some people can get offended.

 
That is the thing the Yanks continue to do it and always denying their attrocities and not apologizing. I don't remember the Yanks apologizing for the rape of Abu Gharib in Iraq. And the whole list of attrocities just keeps piling up. The Yank schools don't teach kids their wrongdoings and hide their attrocities from the public. They have a lot to apologize for but they keep doing more attrocities around the world instead of apologizing. That is why I was so angry and I hope you understand my reason for my bitterness mad pierrot.
 
You need to relax man. You're not helping anything by discriminating against all white people/Americans/Yanks. If you would discuss issues more rationally you'd probably find that a lot of people agree with you. However, when you just accuse people, they're going to become defensive. I would never make a statement like, "All Asian people..., All black people..., etc." and I don't appreciate you doing it either. It's a very closed-minded approach to dealing with things. It doesn't seem that you really have a point other than the fact that you're angry.
 

I understand your bitterness, but you also have to understand my perspective as well. Making broad statements about Americans like that is insulting to many people I know who have devoted their life to changing things. Again, as you said, should all Chinese people be held directly responsible for everything their government does? That fact is, I know many Americans who have been arrested for standing up for what they believe in, and many more who are actively involved in changing the political process. As it has been pointed out, government doesn't always accurately reflect the will of the people. Has China ever apologized for Tibet? What about Taiwan? Etc, etc. Just for the record, I have no problem with the word Yank or Yankee, but the CONTEXT you are using the word in is insulting. Stop using it that way. So instead of making statements you have, try and be a little more objective. For example, "Why hasn't the American government apologized for Abu Gharib?" Or "I think American schools don't do a good enough job teaching about American's atrocities." - I would agree with you if you phrased it that way.

these posts about this or that nation sucks are needless.. they make no change what so ever! If you want to try to appeal/convert Americans, badmouthing them is not the right way. that sort of hate only breeds hate in the people you are targeting.

So is that what you're trying to do? make them agitated so they'll spout ignorance back at you so you can up your ignorance spouting and so on and so forth?

I'm just happy no "yank" has taken the bait. I'm weak and might've taken it if I were one.

I don't know about westerners being "worshipped" per se, but there is obviously some interests in the Western culture. Well let's see here, you have this homogenous population that in history isolated itself from the rest of the world. Now you've got some totally different people (Westerners) that you throw in the mix. It is obvious there is going to be some curiousity. It's not like it's a diverse community such as the US or Europe, so it would be foolish to think that Japanese wouldn't develop an interest in Westerners. Not everyone is like this, there are Japanese people that are not interested in Westerners or there culture, and they may be more partial to countries such as Korea, China, Taiwan, Phillipennes, etc. The Western "Pop culture" has had a severe impact on countries such as Japan. I don't know why mecharmor23 has such an animosity towards Westerners, and take the example of Americans who have done some terrible things and equate it to every person in the population. This guy either needs some education or some therapy, although neither probably would do any good.
 
Hmmmmm, I'd say it mite be because we are tall, our hair has many variations, plus we are exotic foreigners to them Why do so many ppl here love asian girls ? It's just the opposite side of the coin. To quote Chris Tucker from Rush Hour 2 when he's talkin to jackie chan
