Anyone going to Keio?

Rica, isn't it kind of odd that they put me nearly on top of your campus while putting you way out in Tokyo? 0_o Ah well.

So what's it like, adscript, living in a JASSO building? Are they more flexible than a traditional dorm? How's the pricing? Shimoda already has a few rules that are irritating me, but hopefully they won't be that strict. >_<

Hey adscript, yeah the location looks pretty good, but like akaitsume1 said, I would have been right on top of my lab if I was staying where she is!
I believe that yes, we are responsible for paying our rent. From what I have discovered in my research (OK, I read some people's blogs...), the rent at Komaba was 35,000 per month but that was a few years ago. I haven't found any updated info, but I would assume that it's gone up. Maybe someone else knows? I think we are responsible for utilities and internet on top of that.
Haven't seen any rules yet, what are the rules at Shimoda that are irritating you akaitsume? Hope there's no curfew!

Dunno if there's a curfew. God, I hope not. >_<

Ah, stupid rules about overnight visitors (who can only be related or the same sex, in a co-ed dorm) like needing to formally ask for permission over 6 days in advance...and they don't do anything about it. They don't give you extra bedding or anything. I understand needing to sign them in and take responsibility, but a week in advance? *sigh* Control freaks in charge. They need to protect us from ourselves, and our moral fortitude. Lol.

Probably still cheaper than Shimoda. 59,000 with a 20,000 deposit, and then utilities. Not awful, but not great, either. At least I get a single room with a private bath! That's enough for me on that score, lol.

Wow, I'm only realizing now that there are two pages to this topic so far!

A curfew in grad school, Ha. Only in Japan...Private bath is definitely a good thing! Do some get communal baths ?!

Rica, I think we read the same blog. I remember seeing that somewhere as well. If it's really 350/month I may just decide to stay. That's dirt cheap for our location!

Akaitsume, I haven't left yet. I am set to arrive on the 2nd of April. What about you guys? By the way where are you all leaving from? I'm leaving from DC...

Have you started preparing already? Studying for your Japanese placement test?

I'm leaving 9am on the 1st from Sydney, so I'll be getting to Narita in peak hour! (IS there such a thing in Tokyo?)

Still no details on the dorm, I really need to know what the rent is and whether linen is provided. I asked the uni who I should be asking, but they haven't replied. I might ask the dorm directly next.

I've started packing, but I've got a loooong way to go! How about you guys?

there's a japanese placement exam? I'm ready to flunk that. It's probably not that big of a deal.

Haven't started packing yet. Probably won't until a day or 2 before I leave. Yes, there is such a thing in Tokyo (One of the worst places to be during rush hour). And, actually, I would stay away from the subway during rush/peak hour especially with your suitcases!

Yea, wouldn't worry too much about the placement exam.

I figure EVERY hour will be rush hour in Tokyo compared to home!

just avoid 8:00-9:30 am and 5:30-7:00 pm on any train that doesn't have assigned seating.

I'm already in Japan. I'm doing nothing but playing my video games.

Some help

Hello!
Since all of you are going to Keio (or at Keio right now). I was wondering if you guys could explain to me how you got into Keio through MEXT. I want to go for undergraduate in 2012.

Thanks!

Hey! I went to Keio during my undergrad from 2008-09 and I lived in Shimoda Student Village!
I'm trying to get back there for graduate studies. Was it hard for you guys to contact teachers there? My research is on cultural anthropology/sociology, is anyone studying the same thing?

Well, I don't know how everyone else did it, but I contacted a professor I really wanted to work with while I was first getting my proposal and application stuff (for the Embassy selection) ready. So, basically, I had an ok from a professor to join his lab before I went in for the tests and interview.

I'm living there now! 🙂 I was completely caught off-guard by all of the Japanese students living in the dorm, since I thought it was a two wing dorm: Study Abroad students in one and Japanese Athletic Program students in the other. I was right about the two wings, wrong about one being foreigners only. Hahaha. As for contacting teachers, it seems to depend. I had zero trouble, but I ran into another MEXT student whose supervisor would not respond to anything he sent him, even after he got to Japan. I think I ran into at least one or two MEXT students here that are studying sociology, but I have no idea if they're on this forum.

help with mext keio housing??

hi guys.. i just found out a week ago that i'll be at keio from september doing the 6 month preparatory japanese before going on to my research/masters... i was hoping to stay at the tokyo international centre but the mext advisor at keio told me they don't place mext students there and i should just wait until august for them to tell me where i'll be...

can you give me any advice on what the accomodation is like? is it a dorm style deal, or are there private apartment type rooms... is there at least a private toilet and shower room in each room..

i know this is an old thread, but any info would be really helpful

thanks!!
