A bit confused with いる and specific people

I think I get the gist of it, but I'm not quite sure how to use it in an exercise I'm doing.

I have to translate the following sentence: There's Proffesor Yamashita over there!
I would translate it as: あそこにやましたせんせいがいます

But I'm not sure I'm doing it right, because my textbook says a sentence such as あそこにえんぴつがあります would translate as 'There is a pencil over there' (a non specific pencil)

My question is: is it correct to use XXXXXがいます with specific people?
