6-8 month visa cost to Japan

I was wondering if anyone knows how much a visa to Japan is (I will be there for a maximum of 8 months and a minimum of six). I have to get one because I am going to be an exchange student next year, but I heard that visas can be either free or up to $1000. It will be very hard for me to cough up $1000 if that is how much it costs!

The visa itself costs very little, just a processing fee (less than $100). What costs money is to pay for a broker or lawyer to handle the processing and do the hard work for you.

When I got my student visa (good for a year), there was no broker or lawyer involved. Just went to the embassy and filled out some papers, and went back a week later to get the visa.
