"Fifty percent of young men and women in Japan have been subjected to physical or psychological violence in a relationship, a government survey on dating violence has found.

The survey, conducted over the Internet, found that 55.5 percent of the respondents talked to their friends when they suffered violent treatment, but 42.7 percent didn't share their problems with anyone.

Since dating violence is not covered by Japan's domestic violence prevention law, it has been difficult for the government to form a response to the problem, prompting the Cabinet Office to conduct the survey on young single people in their teens and 20s";

Obviously this is a big problem in japanese society which needs to be adressed, but on the other hand it doesn't suprise me that much, from what i have seen japan has a very high pressure society; long working hours, conflicting traditional values and modern values, the shame/guilt system of the culture, pressure to look young and be perfect, pressure to succeed well in education and be acedemic and to land a good job at a young age etc etc...All of these pressures and stresses have to have some effect on japanese people's mental well being, problems with dealing anger management may be one of the many problems which arise from this fast moving, 24/7, high pressure society that so many japanese people live in.

What do you think about this latest research?

The thumb text-messaging culture makes us more intolerant.
Without a quick reply within 5 minutes, some may think you are not supposed to be a friend of them.

But as always, the media coverage only trumpets "Japan is the horrible country with the 55.5 percent DV cases!!!". We should find what we really have to do from the survey after we exclude the non-violent phone related cases.

I highly doubt the DV law should criminalise the belated replay.

I read a Japanese version of this news.
English translation is strange.
In Japanese,
Contents of a questionnaire are questions to young lovers
Have you quarrelled?
Yes.
A reason?
I did not "do an answer of an email"
38.8%
It was watched a record of a cellular phone.
16.7%
It is in total 55.5%

The Japanese government seems to be consulted about a lovers' quarrel of lovers.

I would not really think of this as a 'Japan issue'. This actually happens a lot where I am from, in Mexico and we are not known to be as the most 'hard-working, pressured people'. Even in the U.S. this happens a lot, you see reports and documentaries on domestic violence, young couples violence as well, so it might not really be 'pressure', it is hard to take it for granted.

On the other hand, yes, Japanese people are more pressured to do well. More than I expected. Just take for example a girl in my school, a last-year student who was asked a question and didn't know the answer, so she just began crying. Too much pressure, I think. It is now normal for me to get home everyday at 9pm after practice, I mean, this would be unthinkable on any western-deloped nation, wouldn't it?
