In class today, we were introduced to 「に比べると」, 「と比べると」, 「に比べて」, and 「と比べって」. My sensei said that the four are essentially about the same and that we needn't worry too much about when to use which, as most Japanese folks don't either.

However, regarding the particles, I believe he kind of said that 「に」 is used when comparing something to something else in a "for example," random-selection kind of way, whereas 「と」 is more used when comparing things like look the same or similar. But perhaps I misunderstood.

Regardless, could I please receive some guidance about the differences among the four versions of the construction that I typed above, especially the subtle differences between the usage of 「に」 and 「と」?

As for the verb's form, I suppose this essentially is standard, relying on the form of the sentence you're making. For example:
(1.) リンゴはバナナに比べると、もちろん違うところがありますね。 (Profound.)
(2.) 友達の新しい携帯電話を見て、僕の携帯と比べて、あまりかっこよくないと思った。
Additionally, this would indicate that other forms, such as 「比べれば」 and 「比べたら」 are legal as well, but are they used often?

よろしくお願いします。

I've never considered the differences in any depth except that Ni is translated more akin to "compared to" and "to" "compared with."

比べれば is fine. 比べたら I don't see as much
personally...

By the way, what do you mean by ところ here ? I was waiting for another possible comment, but I still don't think it's quite natural...
「ところ」は一部の違いを指しているのじゃないかな。。。Also you don't need the idea of making a comparison in this sentence. Just apples and bananas are.... completely different or have different parts ?
Also, here I was thinking instead of repeating 携帯 you might want to stick in の as a placeholder (+と比べると(比べて),) leave out 見て(携帯電話は) as the first clause and it should be great ! 。。。でいいですよね。

1. Well, I thought that it could be used in the sense of "qualities." In other words, "If you compare apples with bananas, well of course there are differences." A bit odd admittedly but it's what came to me. Was your Japanese explanation saying that "tokoro" is used only for pointing out individual differences, essentially?

2. So then "友達の新しい携帯電話は僕のと比べると、あまりかっこよくないと思った。"?

ありがとう! Many thanks!
