急 / と / まっし / おんなじ

1. バーノンおじさんは時々急カーブを切り、進行方向と反対の方向に車を走らせたりした 。

a) Why 急 and not 急に? Is there any difference?

b) While I more or less understand this sentence, I am hazy about the purpose of と. What is its function?


2. 一行は一日中飲まず食わずで走りに走った。

What is 走りに走った? Is this a set pattern? Maybe suggesting doing something over and over again?


3. 「ごめんなさいまっし。ハリー・ポッターという人はいなさるかね？」

a) Is まっし some variant of ます? What sort of language is this?

b) I seem to be having a blank with いなさる. Could it be the stem of いる + なさる? Again, what sort of language?


4. Is there any difference in the connotations of おなじ and おんなじ?

1) a)
急 modifies カーブ in 急カーブ. It expresses the curve / turn is sharp. On the other hand, 急に modifies 切り. It's temporal; unexpectedly or immediately.

3) a)
It's a variation of ませ, which is the imperative of ます. (Have you seen いらっしゃいませ, お帰りなさいませ, お休みなさいませ or like that?) まし (and いなさる(かね)) shows that the speaker is an old person and from rural area. (but not crude, he/she is polite.)

b)
Yes, it's いる + なさる. You can think it's いらっしゃる.

4)
The latter sounds more colloquial.

Thanks Toritoribe... what part of speech is 急 in 急カーブ? I thought "sharp turn" would have to be 急なカーブ, no?

急 is a noun, and used as a prefix here, as in 急用（＝急な用）, 急病（急な病（気））, 急襲（急に襲うこと）. 急なカーブ is basically used only for a sharp corner on the road, not for an action "to turn sharp".
