1. 家族や友人との旅とは異なった側面を彼らは経験させて くれるだろう。

My guess: "When travelling with family or friends, they (= family and friends) will allow one to experience various aspects (of the places one visits)."

a) Is this right? I am not confident I even have the right subjects and objects.

b) Is there an implied but omitted 自分に or similar?

c) Why 異なった側面 and not 異なる側面?


2. えっと、なんか、今、いい映画やってるんやけども、あ の、一緒に見に...

What is やけども? Could it be just や・けど・も, some filler words that don't actually add a huge amount of actual meaning?


3. 見たことなくって、なんかすごくいい映画って聞いてた から、行きたかったんだ。

My translation: "I've never seen it, but I've heard it's a terrific film, so I wanted to go."

What is the grammar of なくって? (Apologies if I should know this.)


4. じゃあ、えっと、映画はそれ８時からで、え～と、その 前になんか食べて行こうか。

My translation: "Right, well, the film starts at 8, so, um, shall we go and get something to eat first?"

What is the purpose of それ?


5. Person A has invited person B for a drink, but person B can't make it.

A: え～、そうなの。残念だなぁ。足立君は行き会いが 悪いからなぁ。
B: あ～、そんなことないですよ。

My translation:

A: Oh, OK. That's a shame. You [Adachi] are a hard man to get to meet!
B: That's not true!

Is this correct?

Indeed 行き合い is listed in dictionaries, but I haven't seen it actually used. It seems to be more likely a classical word.

Oh, now that you mention it, I just noticed that the headword is written 行き合ひ. That's a pretty good indicator that it's a 死語.

Right, I wondered about that actually, but then what is the purpose of mentioning 家族や友人? These 留学生たち are, as far as I can tell, the narrator's students, so they wouldn't really be 家族や友人, would they? Do you understand how the two things are related? I wondered if it is contrasting 留学生たち with 家族や友人, implying that when travelling with the latter you wouldn't get the 異なった側面 ... but can とは have that function?

Yes, sorry, it's 付き合い. Can I get away with blaming the small print again? So, is 付き合いが悪い referring to the difficulty of getting to know this person? I'm not certain in what sense 悪い is used...

5. I think I understand 家族や友人との旅が経験させてくれるもの, but I am still uncertain about this use of と. Is とは just introducing 家族や友人との旅（が経験させてくれるもの） as a topic? (I mean, what would be the difference if と was deleted?)

Also, are 彼ら part of 家族や友人, or are 彼ら considered a different group of people contrasted with 家族や友人? From your translation I understand the former, but I actually meant the latter (so, while you said "You got it", maybe I didn't get it).

It's the reciprocal と here (like これはそれと違う). は is marking the whole phrase (家族や友人との旅) as a topic.

I think 彼ら is referring to the other classmates (or people from different cultural backgrounds) having that effect on each other, but I'm not entirely sure.

OK, how about this? Doesn't this(and Glenn-san's explanation) show the function of と?

家族や友人との旅が経験させてくれる側面と、彼らとの旅が経験させてくれる（だろう）側面は異なっている。

From this I understand と to correspond to English "compared to". Is that correct?

Edited: OH, HOLD ON. I've been thinking all along that 異なった meant that the aspects afforded by 彼ら differed amongst themselves. But now it has occurred to me that 異なった probably means that the aspects afforded by 彼ら differ from those afforded by 家族や友人. Is that right? If so, then all my difficulties with と disappear.

Yes, the side that they were allowed to experience with their friends and family is going to be different from the side they'll be allowed to experience with people from various cultural backgrounds.
