帯をギュッとね

Hello guys,

As for my first manga I chose 帯をギュッとね, but I can't even translate the TITLE! I feel totally sad and hopeless...

I've only chosen this one because it was the cheapest manga, since Naruto was 5x more expensive than this one.

Obi is a "kimono", as far as I know; wo is the particle and ギュッと is kind of a stylized way of saying: gyutto meaning hard, tough, ne is another particle.

But I can't find a way of translating it. I know I shouldn't be translating everything I see, but since I'm still learning, I'd like to know what the title means.

Could you help me out?
Has anyone read this? Is it good?

This is one of my favorite manga!

I think it's difficult to translate to English.
Obi is a belt part of Japanese clothing. Kimono or clothing of Judo have it.

I think the translation is "Let's tighten our obi.". But I feel the meaning of "Let's put spirit into Judo" from the title.

My English is not well enough. So I would like to know other's opinion too.

Are you familiar with Judo? I've never read it but Google search says it's a Judo manga.

This manga is about Judo. There are a lot of Judo words. I think you have to recognize them when translating.
The school story is good for learning daily conversation. But I feel it might be a little difficult to translate chatty words.

I like English translated Japanese Manga too. Because I can compare both Languages. Unfortunately this manga doesn't have English version.

Judo is a very famous sport here in Brazil. We even have Brazilian Judo that it's known as the best Judo style.

So, do you recommend any manga for beginners?

I think your choice is the best if you are interested in Judo.

The most famous Judo manga is YAWARA in Japan.
That's why the Japanese Judo expert Ryoko Tani was called Yawara-chan.
But main character is female. So I'm not sure whether it is the best for you.

Macky, I'm not a fan of Judo, I actually don't even like it. I only chose this one because it was cheap compared to those "famous" mangas.

Does it use a lot o slang? I think I'd like to learn the "normal Japanese" before I start studying about slangs and stuff like that.

If you want to learn proper Japanese, I don't recommend manga as a learning material especially for biginner learners. Manga contains plenty of contractions, colloquial expressions, dialects that are made specific for the story, etc., which would be tough to understand even for intermidiate or advanced learners.

I agree Tritoribe's opinion.
Manga is not the best choice for learning Japanese properly. I recommend it if you really like Japanese Manga.

If you want to read something as trial, I recommend "bilingual comics series". The manga's for Japanese who studies English.
It contains both Japanese and English. I like "Nodame Cantabile" in them.

Attempting to read normal full-length manga at this early a stage in the learning process is pretty much a guaranteed exercise in frustration.

On the other hand, I believe that four-panel manga can be excellent learning materials, but preferably with a good knowledge of the basics of Japanese and a good foundation of kanji knowledge.

I only read the summary because I really can't read the rest. By now I'm doing good with the summary but I know I'm not able to read the rest yet.
