Hi. Can I think of the underlined part as a set phrase, meaning "I have no other way but..."?

Yes,他にない is similar to しかない、but 他にない emphasizes the lack of alternatives compared to the relatively flat "only" meaning of しかない.

Aside from tone they are interchangeable.
