1. 催促がましくて恐縮ですが、先日お貸ししたお金を返していただけませんか。

Translation given: "I'm afraid this sounds like a demand, but could you return the money I lent you the other day?"

What is ましくて?


2. 自分を健康だと思っている人はどのぐらいいますか。

I'm assuming this means "How many people consider themselves healthy?", but I am a bit unsure about を. Why that choice of particle? Would any other particles work?


3. 子供の心のクリニック

What would be the best translation of this, especially the word 心?


4. 食欲不振と腹痛で心身症と診断され、入院していた私立中学一年生のＡ子ちゃんは、順調に治療も進み、暮れには外泊の予定でした。ところが、前日から激しい腹痛とおう吐で寝込んでしまったのです。

My attempted translation: "With his stomach pains and lack of appetite diagnosed as psychosomatic, the treatment of hospital patient A, a first-year private middle school student, had been proceeding well, and the plan had been to discharge him at the end of the day/year. However, since the previous day, he had been laid up in bed with severe stomach pains and vomiting."

As well as other things that may be incorrect:

a) What is the purpose of で in 食欲不振と腹痛で? Why not が or は? I wonder if I may have the sense of this part wrong,

b) The dictionary says that 暮れ can mean either the end of the day or the end of the year, but this story is actually set over the New Year period, so how do we know which is meant?

c) What does 外泊 mean here? The sentence seems to make sense if it is interpreted as "go home", but the dictionary says it means "spend the night away from home", which is almost the exact opposite.


5. 症状が消えると、Ａ子ちゃんは「本当は家に帰るのがこわかったの。去年の暮れを思い出しそうで・・・」と打ち明けてくれました。

My translation: "After his symptoms had eased, A confided, 'I was really afraid of going home. It kind of reminded me of the end of last year.'"

1. Look for ～がましい. That's not the particle が

4. In the context of a person who is hospitalized, 外泊 means to spend the night away from the hospital (at home), a common practice when conditions allow during an extended hospital stay. For an absence just during the day the term is 外出.

2. 自分が健康だと･･･ is also fine.

3. Cannot think of a good translation, it's to express 'mental' in a friendly way.

a) 食欲不振と腹痛 is the reason, not the subject.
It is A who was diagnosed as psychosomatic, with （で） her stomach pains and lack of appetite.
By the way A is a girl, not a boy. ～子 stands for a girl's name. You should replace 'he/his' with 'she/her'. ;-)

b) 暮れ here means the end of a year, it never means the new year.
Perhaps A was to spend time from the end of a year till new year?

5. "After her symptoms had eased".
It's not 本当に (really) but 本当は (the truth is, to be honest, etc.)
She could not tell the reason when she had the symptoms. Afterwards she confided the truth.

As undrentide-san wrote, the subject of 診断され is Ａ子. で indicates the cause/reason of the diagnosis. が or を also can also work there, but it can be interprited as "passive of adversity", i.e., it could sound as if it's an erroneous diagnosis.

b)
1) The end of a year is more common, 2) as you can see in the meaning of 外泊, to leave hospital temporarily at the end of the day doesn't make much sense.

Strange, I have never heard of a practice of people being sent home for one night and then returning to hospital. Perhaps it does not exist in the UK.

It blew my mind too the first time I encountered it. You'd be amazed the things they keep people hospitalized for that would be done practically on a drive-thru basis elsewhere.

It doesn't actually make sense to refer to an extended discharge as a night away from home or "overnight stay" either unless it is sort of idiomatic in the context of the entire New Year holidays (年末年始の外泊).

Oh, that's interesting. 外泊 doesn't always mean "one night", though.

As for the end of the year, many doctors and nurses take holiday. That's one of the reasons many inpatients go home. (In fact, most hospitals are nearly "empty" in that season.)

Probably you are misunderstanding 外泊. It's not limited to the end of the year.

A coworker diagnosed with cancer was recently hospitalized for radiation therapy for several months. When his condition allowed it, he went home on Friday afternoon and reported back on Monday morning. He wasn't technically discharged from the hospital; he was just away for a couple of days. It is primarily an administrative distinction, I would think.

In the UK, in my experience, people are usually only kept in hospital when they are not well enough to go home, or they need to be kept under observation. If they were well enough to have a night at home then usually they would be well enough to be discharged.

Probably you are misunderstanding 外泊. It's not limited to the end of the year.

But more often than not 外泊 seems to express 一夜だけの外泊 or 退院へ向けた外泊中 interchangeable with discharge on a trial basis of one or two nights to get a better feel for the patient's strength and underlying condition. I'm just saying that when 年末年始の外泊 is nothing more than 新年(のお休み)には間に合うために退院 or somesuch it is unlikely to be translated as overnight stay or night(s) away from home/hospital in English.

It isn't limited to hospital; any night spent away from where one would normally be expected to spend the night is 外泊. Not can one infer anything about the duration.
