なっている

Can one say "なっています" to indicate that something is currently changing? (For example, "今、上手になっています。") I'm under the impression that you can't for some reason, but I'm really not sure why think so (besides that I think I heard it somewhere).

If the change is still in progress and is expected to develop further, you can say
なってきている
e.g.
少しずつ秋らしくなってきています。
君の英語はだいぶ上手になってきたね。

Another expression is
なりつつある
e.g.
少しずつ秋らしくなりつつあります。
彼の英語は上手になりつつある。

Something is about to change its status, or reach a certain level, target, etc.
almost, but not completely yet.
なるところだ
なりかけている

Something is seem to happen or expected so (but the change has not started yet)
なりそうだ
e.g.
午後は雨になりそうだ

There should be a lot more to express it, just a few examples....


～て来る、～て来ている
～つつある
～ところだ
～かける、～かけている
～そうだ

These can be used with other verbs than なる.

It means that you've become good at Japanese: i.e., it expresses a state.
