とされていた / ほど / とより / ほとんど

1. アトムのような人間型のロボットを開発するにあたって 最も困難だとされていたのが、完全二足歩行だった。

My translation: "During the development of humanoid robots like 'Atom', the greatest difficulty was making them walk properly on two feet."

I assume 困難だとされていたのが = 困難・だ・と・されて・いた・の・が, but I do not understand the function of とされていた in this context.


2. ・・・それは人間の歩き方にはほど遠いものだった。

What is the purpose of ほど here? Could it mean something like "quite"?


3. 下半身を付けて安定した歩行とより人間らしい高度な動 きができるように改良を重ねる。

I understand:

下半身を付けて安定した歩行 = "stable walk with upper body attached"

人間らしい高度な動きができるように改良を重ねる = "(they) kept improving (the robot) so that it could move in an accomplished way like a human"

However, I do not understand the purpose of とより.


4. その仕事はまだほとんど終わったと言える状態ではない 。

Translation given: "The job isn't anywhere near done."

Does ほとんど modify 終わった (i.e. rather than the whole of 終わったと言える状態ではない)?

I am still having problems fitting 安定した歩行と into the sentence. I understand it is something to do with stable walking, but I do not understand its relationship with the other parts of the sentence, or really what と is doing.

ほとんど... 状態ではない = it is nowhere near the case that...
