つもり usage

\o It's been a while. I have a short question about つもり, specifically when it doesn't mean "intend to".

Few random examples from Google, etc. (not 100% sure if they are grammatically correct)

「とくに炭水化物抜きを意識してたつもりはなかったけど、気づいたら大好きな白いごはんをしばらく食べてなかった。」

「ほとんどGIRBAUDのブランドのデニムだった・・・意識してたつもりはなかったけど、考えたらはきやすいし・・・体型をカバーしてくれてめちゃめちゃ細く見せてくれるし。」

「あんまり意識してたつもりはなかったんだけど、改めて言われると恥ずかしい。」

I'm mostly interested in the 「意識してたつもりはなかった」 part. From what I understand, つもり should can mean "conviction", but it's kind of confusing to me in this case. Not exactly sure what that clause means exactly. However, wouldn't for example, that last sentence mean roughly the same thing if 「つもりはなかった」got removed?

Also, I'm wondering if つもり can't mean intend when the verb preceding it is in the past, like in (example from DBJG) - 「話したつもりでしたが、話さなかったんですね？」. I think the verb would need to non-past to mean "I intended to tell you but...".

Lastly, does this have something to do with volitional verbs as well? For example, if it was 「意識するつもり」, I'm pretty sure it can't mean "intend" since you can't control if you're -aware of something- or not. On the other hand, I've seen an example like, 「怒るつもりはない」which would mean "i don't intend to get angry" but it has very few hits on google so I'm thinking that it's not correct.

Side question: I was checking 大辞林 for つもり usage and seen a usage which I don't understand or that explanation sentence. 「実際はそうではないが，そうなっているような気持ち。「買った―で貯金する」」. More examples from 大辞泉 -「死んだ―で働きます」「親の―で世話する」.

意識してたつもりはなかったけど means "I didn't think I was conscious of it, but (probably I was actually conscious of it, therefore)".

It's the same also for 話したつもりでしたが、話さなかったんですね？. This means "I thought I told you but actually I didn't, right?".

意識する can be volitional, meaning "to keep attention to~ / to be careful to~", so つもり in 意識するつもり can mean "to intend", but yes, you can't say, for instance, "雨が降るつもりはない". If you are a god or something and can control weather, you can say 雨を降らすつもりはない, though.

The last usage is a supposition; "to do ~ with an attempt as if...".

Short question about 「雨が降るつもりはない」. I think はず would need to be used instead of つもり, but I'm wondering exactly why つもり wouldn't work in this case? Because you can't have "conviction" about rain falling, since you just can't possibly know about whether it will fall or not?

Simply because 降る is non-volitional. 雨を降らすつもりはない can be correct, since 降らす is volitional.
